Netflix revealed a new look at Zack Snyder's highly anticipated sci-fi film Rebel Moon.
Unveiled as a part of Netflix Geeked Week 2022, the update provides fans with a look at one of the film's alien characters. The creature in question is positioned between two giant metallic doors, surrounded by billowing smoke. The design appears to be have been achieved through practical effects, but the identify of the actor is currently unknown.
While little is known about the minutia of Rebel Moon's story, the synopsis confirms that the film will focus on a small, peaceful colony on the edge of the galaxy trying to live under the devastating rule of a tyrant known as Balisarius. In order to survive and repel the evil ruler's army, a mysterious young woman is sent on an adventure to recruit a team of warriors from a collection of bizarre nearby planets. The movie features an all-star cast, including Sofia Boutella (Kingsman: The Secret Service, Star Trek Beyond), Ray Fisher (Justice League, True Detective), Charlie Hunnam (Sons of Anarchy, Pacific Rim), Djimon Hounsou (Guardians of the Galaxy, Shazam!) and Ed Skrein (Deadpool, Maleficent: Mistress of Evil).
Rebel Moon was originally pitched as a Star Wars movie shortly after the release of Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith. The project was reportedly deprioritized after Disney acquired Lucasfilm in 2012, prompting Snyder to rework the story into an original intellectual property. "This is me growing up as an Akira Kurosawa fan, a Star Wars fan," Snyder said. "It's my love of sci-fi and a giant adventure. My hope is that this also becomes a massive IP and a universe that can be built out."
"I've spent the last two or three years building out this universe," Snyder continued. Every corner has to be painted in. I've been doing designs, constantly drawing and really cultivating its fertile ground to make this world fully realized."
Details on Rebel Moon's development remain scarce but Snyder recently shared some behind-the-scenes images of principle photography. The photos highlight what appears to be the cargo bay of a spacecraft and Hounsou's character General Titus, adorned in ornate armor. Production is reportedly planned to run into November 2022 and Netflix is allegedly looking to release Rebel Moon as two feature-length films.
Rebel Moon does not yet have a release date but it will stream on Netflix.
