Katy Perry released a music video for her new single, "Electric," as part of Pokémon's 25th-anniversary celebration.
"When I visited the Pokémon Café while touring Japan, I got so nostalgic. It took me back to my junior high years. So when I got the call to be a part of the 25th-anniversary celebration alongside Post Malone and J Balvin, I was elated," Katy Perry said in a statement.
Directed by Carlos Lopez Estrada, who also directed the Disney feature film Raya and the Last Dragon, the music video follows both Perry and Pikachu through all stages of their evolution. "The song's themes -- resilience, igniting your inner light -- have guided my life and also parallel Pokémon's story and characters," Perry said. "Pikachu is the evolved form of Pichu, so in the video, you see the younger version of me with Pichu and myself in the present day with Pikachu. We both evolve, yet retain a sense of playfulness."
Perry's new single is part of the P25 Music program, a collaboration between Pokémon Company International and the Universal Music Group (UMG), which will also include other unnamed musical acts. The track will appear on Pokémon 25: The Album, set to release Fall 2021 and will also feature music from Post Malone and J. Balvin. Also available is an "Electric"-themed merch collection, including t-shirts, hoodies and tote bags, all of which are available for pre-order and go on sale June 25.
"Katy Perry has created a vibrant anthem to help us celebrate 25 years of Pokémon with 'Electric,' an amazing song about recognizing one's own journeys and evolving," said Colin Palmer, vice president of marketing for The Pokémon Company International. "We also hope fans around the world enjoy seeing Pikachu team up with Katy in the music video for 'Electric,' which is a wonderful visual accompaniment to the inspirational song."
The Pokémon Company International also launched an official website for the anniversary, 25 Years of Adventures: A Journey Through the Pokémon World -- in addition, several major brands will have unique Pokémon-themed promotions and merchandise throughout 2021, including Build-A-Bear and McDonald's.
