Phairo’s ‘Dwemer Sphere’ is the final single before we feel the full force of his EP ‘9’ – ‘longer than an EP, shorter than an LP, more like a mixtape of my loves and influences’ – his cherished solo project after producing for ELIZA, Bruno Major, Sam Wills et al. After the jazzy exuberance of ‘Drum Workout’ and ‘Galacticon”s dancefest, this release brings a more sinister, mythic vibe.
‘Dwemer Sphere’: gently throbbing sustained high notes retreat as a stern, thudding beat and a distorted bass riff build tension like patrolling footsteps – something’s coming… Whatever squeaks and sings in the undergrowth ventures out in the breakdown, before the unseen power reasserts itself. A whole legendary landscape’s story in a single.
‘I’d just acquired a Moog Grandmother synth, I found you can make it squeal if you twist the pitch knob with the sync button engaged’ Phairo says. ‘I’d been listening to dubstep and wanted some of that broken half time groove, so after getting a good take of the bassline I built the drums around it and Dwemer Sphere was born!’
The project’s artwork by Osian Jenaer is heavily inspired by Phairo’s intrigue with the number 9 and his love for sci-fi, nature and otherworldly scenes. A natural for alternative electronic imprint LG105, Phairo joins Mall Grab, Effy, Beka, Lawrence Hart, bad tuner, Model Man, on their distinguished roster.
