Peach Boy Riverside Anime Trailer Reimagines a Japanese Folkhero

The Japanese entertainment company VAP released a trailer for the upcoming Peach Boy Riverside anime, which brings the popular manga series to life on the small screen.

VAP posted the action-packed trailer to YouTube, as reported by Crunchyroll. The trailer provides viewers with a brief introduction to each character and their powers, as well as the series' opening theme -- "Dark spiral journey" by Q-MHz and featuring Yuko Suzuhana.

Peach Boy Riverside is directed by Shigeru Ueda, known for his work on the 2008 horror anime Mnemosyne. Asahi Production, the company behind the Hello Kitty: Ringo no Mori anime series, is overseeing the animation. Peach Boy Riverside begins airing in Japan in July; but, at the time of this writing, it's unclear when the series will be available internationally.

First published in 2008, the Peach Boy Riverside web manga was originally written and illustrated by Coolkyousinnjya, who also wrote Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid. Coolkyousinnjya eventually joined forces with illustrator Johanne to adapt the web manga into a publication for Kodansha's Shonen Magazine R.

Peach Boy Riverside follows Salterine Aldarake, a princess who wishes to venture outside the city and into the dangerous, monster-inhabited world. After meeting a traveler, who turns out to be the Japanese folk hero Momotaro, she can. Similar to folklore, Momotaro travels the land and vanquishes demons, but in Peach Boy Riverside, he has the princess as a companion.

Fans can catch the Peach Boy Riverside premiere on the Japanese networks TOKYO MX, BS NTV and AT-X, beginning on July 1, with another broadcast on J:TV on July 7.
