Crunchyroll will release the remainder of the Season 1 episodes of Onyx Equinox on Saturday, Dec. 26. Crunchyroll released a trailer on YouTube celebrating the news, featuring tweets from fans and footage from the first five episodes.
Created by Sofia Alexander, Onyx Equinox follows an Aztec boy named Izel who is saved from death by the gods and forced to act as humanity's champion. Izel is joined by his friends, including priestess Xanastaku and warrior Zyanya, on a journey across ancient Mesoamerica in order to close the five gates of the Underworld. The series is heavily inspired by Mesoamerica mythology, with the Aztec gods Quetzalcoatl and Tezcatlipoca playing a major role. Onyx Equinox is also the first original series to be produced entirely out of Crunchyroll Studios.
Alexander also hosts a companion podcast that features several members of the creative staff. Every week, the team discusses the inspiration and creative process behind each episode. New episodes will premiere every week through Feburary 2021.
The first five episodes of Onyx Equinox are currently available to stream on Crunchyroll. Episodes 6 through 12 will be released on Saturday, Dec. 26.
