WARNING: The following contains spoilers for One Piece Chapter 1038, "Kid & Law vs. Big Mom," by Eiichiro Oda, Stephen Paul, and Vanessa Satone, available in English from Viz Media.
One Piece's Onigashima Raid has been going on for 60 chapters now, and with the end close at hand, it's still up in the air on how this monumental arc will end. Characters are scrambling to retreat as the island is going up in flames, and while all of Kaido's subordinates have been taken down, Big Mom is still standing strong. Trafalgar Law and Eustass Kid have been battling it out with the soul-sucking hag, but it's felt like a losing battle for the two Supernovas for quite some time. Chapter 1038 may just close the book on this battle, however.
On the performance floor, Big Mom stood over the defeated bodies of the two captains. Their crews could only watch in horror as this could have been the end for their beloved leaders. The Kid Pirates, and the Heart Pirates swarmed to and save their injured captains, but Big Mom was just too strong for them to get close. Using Hera, Big Mom bathed the performance hall in lightning strikes, knocking out the pirate crews in one violent sweep.
After, Big Mom's attention returned to the roof as she's surprised she hasn't heard Kaido claim victory yet. The old woman was convinced that Kaido must not be taking the fight seriously, and so she decided it was up to her to go up and end Straw Hat's life.
While Big Mom was distracted, fans saw Law prepare his "Kroom," using his Awakened devil fruit power on his katana. The sword extended and then pierced into Big Mom's cheek without her noticing. However, this attack didn't seem to do any damage to the Yonko, but Law was aware of that. He used his attack "Shock Willie," causing an electrical shockwave to spread out through Big Mom, damaging her from the inside. The damage seemed immense as streams of blood spilled out from all sides of her.
A number of steel beams who had been turned into homies by Big Mom all rushed at Law, but they are suddenly pulled away. Kid activated his magnetism which attracted all the metal and scrap around him. Kid goes on to say how simply killing Big Mom was the only thing driving him in this fight, as it seems he wants to see Luffy beat Kaido, for himself. The magnetic pirate captain puts it best in the line "Even water droplets can carve stone given enough time. There ain't a single thing in this world that's totally impervious to damage!"
Kid charged at Big Mom with a massive bull made of scrap metal, calling it "Punk Corna Dio." The two captains then proudly claimed at the same time "I'd rather die than let you go up to the roof!"
This was a strong chapter illustrating how far Law and Kid have come, but have they really taken Big Mom down for good? It's clearly illustrated that their attacks have damaged Big Mom. Oda does, however, like to trick his readers into thinking his villains are defeated, but still have some fight left in them. This happened in this very same arc with Ulti when it took Nami herself to defeat her. Most likely, the next time the spotlight returns to the Law, Kidd, and Big Mom fight is when fans will see how this battle ends.
