One Piece was created by Eiichiro Oda and was first published in Weekly Shonen Jump in 1997. The long-running epic has since become the #1 best selling manga series of all time, with almost half a billion copies in circulation worldwide. The manga has been licensed and localized in over 58 countries worldwide. An anime series based on Oda's manga premiered in 1999, and is currently on its 20th season. The manga series published its 1000th chapter at the beginning of 2021, and the anime series is scheduled to hit its 1000th episode shortly as well. In addition to the anime and manga, there have been over a dozen One Piece video games, released on everything from the original black-and-white Game Boy to current platforms such as the Nintendo Switch. Luffy and other characters from One Piece have also frequently appeared as guest characters in other games well, including the crossover fighter games Battle Stadium D.O.N. and Jump Superstars. A live-action adaptation of One Piece is in production from Netflix, with Oda serving as an executive producer on the series.
The manga's international popularity was recently highlighted at the Tokyo Olympic games, with many athletes donning One Piece poses or making other references to the series during the competition. The president of France also recently displayed his love for Oda's opus.
The series tells the story of Monkey D. Luffy, a young boy who dreams of being a famous pirate and who accidentally consumes the supernatural Gum-Gum Fruit, which gives his body rubber-like properties that allow him to stretch and grow his limbs. Luffy eventually becomes the captain of the Straw Hat Pirates, a colorful crew that includes the swordsman Zoro, the perverted chef Sanji and the intelligent but greedy Nami. Luffy sets out to become the King of the Pirates and unravel the mystery surrounding the One Piece, a long lost treasure left behind by a legendary pirate.
The One Piece manga is localized and distributed internationally by VIZ Media. The anime series is available for streaming on Netflix, Hulu, Crunchyroll, VRV and Funimation.
