WARNING: The following contains spoilers for One Piece, Chapter #996 by Eiichiro Oda, Stephen Paul and Vanessa Satone, available in English now from Viz Media.
Characters all across Onigashima are in a race to reach the rooftop of the Skull Dome in One Piece's Wano Arc. As almost everyone's focus is drawn to the upper floors of Kaido's palace, however, Trafalgar Law is now able to reach the basement levels with minimal interference in his quest for answers.
On the second basement floor level, Law cut down one of Kaido's Gifters with ease. Flashing through his mind are his memories of Corazon, the only person of the Donquixote Pirates who really cared about him. When Corazon overheard Law talk about his real name, being that it is actually Trafalgar D. Water Law, the former Celestial Dragon took him aside telling him not to give his real name to just anyone. Furthermore, Corazon told Law that those with the name "D." are considered Enemies of God. Given how close to deities the world nobles consider themselves to be, this also makes them enemies of the Celestial Dragons.
Back in the present, Trafalgar Law continues walking through the basement until happens upon a Poneglyph, the massive ancient slabs of text that carry the forgotten history of ages long gone. He has yet another flashback, this time to Zou, where he revealed his true name to Nico Robin, the only person alive who can decipher the Poneglyphs. It seems Law was hoping to get more answers about the Will of D. from Robin, but unfortunately, she doesn't have any new information about this phenomenon.
The Road Poneglyphs are Law's only chance at finding more answers. There are only four of these red-colored Poneglyphs in existence, and two are in possession of Big Mom and Kaido respectively. Robin collected the information from the Zou Road Poneglyph and Brook managed to inscribe Big Mom's Road Poneglyph as well.
Unfortunately, the Poneglyph that Law finds is not Kaido's, meaning his search through Onigashima will have to continue. Regardless, Law promises to Corazon that he will find the answers he needs about "D." and what fate has in store for those who possess this cursed name.
This more subdued subplot offers a break between the nonstop action of chapter 996. Law's always been a person who hates being in the dark about something. With Dolfamingo finally out of his life, going after the secrets of the Will of D just makes sense for him. It's sweet to see Law still has Cora in his thoughts after all these years, but also that he trusted Robin enough to tell her his real name. It looks like the stoic Surgeon of Death isn't as much of a loner as he'd lead you to believe.
