The new series began filming in early February. Several cast and crew members on the series posted images of their arrival to Cape Town, but so far, Netflix has not released any images of the cast in costume, or any completed images of the show's sets. An eagle-eyed fan managed to capture images of several pirate ships being constructed at the studio where the show is being filmed, one of which was clearly the Miss Love Duck, the flagship of Iron Mace Alvida's pirate crew.
In 2021, Netflix revealed the actors that will play the live-action Straw Hat Pirates, which includes Iñaki Godoy (Go, Youth!) as stretchy protagonist Monkey D. Luffy, Taz Skylar (Boiling Point) as the fighting chef Sanji, Mackenyu (Chihayafuru) as the swordsman Roronoa Zoro, Emily Rudd (Fear Street) as the navigator Nami and Jacob Romero Gibson (Greenleaf) as the sniper Usopp. Earlier this month, Netflix announced additional cast members, which includes Vincent Regan, who will play Luffy's grandfather, Monkey D. Garp, and numerous characters from the original manga's Romance Dawn arc, including Ilia Isorelýs Paulino (The Sex Lives of College Girls), who will portray the previously mentioned pirate captain Alvida.
The new series is being produced as a collaboration between Netflix and Tomorrow Entertainment, the studio behind the short-lived Cowboy Bebop live-action series. X-Files' Steve Maeda and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s Matt Owens are serving as the new adaptation's head writers and showrunners. Eiichiro Oda, the original creator of the One Piece manga, is working on the show as its executive producer.
Luffy's adventures on the high sees first began in Weekly Shonen Jump over 24 years ago. The story of the Straw Hat Pirates is now the best selling manga series ever made, with approximately half-a-billion copies in circulation worldwide. The One Piece manga is available in English from VIZ Media. The anime series, which is currently on hiatus due to a hacking incident at anime studio Toei Animation, can be streamed from Funimation and Crunchyroll, while parts of the series are available on Hulu and Netflix.
