One Piece: How Trafalgar Law’s Macabre Ope Ope Fruit Works

One Piece has been known for its weird and eccentric powers and abilities. This is a series with a clown pirate captain who can separate his body into pieces and an archeologist who can sprout limbs wherever she wants. However, amongst these oddball abilities, the strangest by far is still Trafalgar Law who possesses the Ope-Ope Fruit. Let's go over how The Surgeon of Death uses his devil fruit powers, where they came from, and some of his best utilizations of it.

On its own, the Ope-Ope Fruit is a very coveted devil fruit. If the user has adept medical knowledge, its power can be used to treat diseases, perform strenuous surgeries with ease, and even cure physical disabilities. The Ope-Ope user can also sacrifice their own life and grant another person immortality, which is why Doflamingo and the World Government are both after such a dangerous devil fruit in the first place. The World Government was even willing to pay five billion beli in exchange for the Ope-Ope Fruit.

In Trafalgar Law's backstory, we learn how Doflamingo tipped off his brother, Rosinate, about the fruit so he could eat it to save Law from his Amber Lead Disease, unaware that his brother had eaten the Calm-Calm Fruit already. Rosinate ended up force-feeding the Ope-Ope Fruit to the illness-stricken boy so that the fruit would not fall into Doflamingo's hands and he could still save Law's life. Rosinate would then be killed by his own brother shortly after.

Law grew to be able to create a space called "ROOM," allowing him to manipulate anything within this area with his devil fruit powers. The area works as an operating room, with Law as the surgeon with free reign to do as he pleases. The first time fans saw Law's powers at work was during the Sabaody Archipelago Arc in Chapter 504. When the marines surrounded the auction house, Law, Kid, and Luffy all briefly teamed up to take down the marines.

Once Law's ROOM is activated, he's able to sever a person's body without killing them. This attack is called "Amputate." At one point he cut off a marine's head and started tossing it in the air like a volleyball. Later, in chapter 505, he used "Shambles" to mix and match a bunch of marines' body parts. Shambles can also be used for a quick escape as Law can use it to simply replace the position of any object in the room, including himself.

"Takt" is another of Law's strongest attacks. It allows him to levitate objects within his room. This was how he knocked Big Mom off Onigashima's roof in Chapter 1009; by slamming a massive boulder into her. Law can also cause internal damage to a person's body with his sword if he manages to stab them using "Gamma Knife." This is how he bypassed a lot of the more resilient and tougher enemies he's faced like Doflamingo and Kaido.

By far his most terrifying ability is "Scalpel." Law simply needs to thrust his hand into a person's chest and he can pop their heart out of their body. They will live, but any damage done to the severed heart will transfer to the person. In Chapter 675, Law had to strike a deal with Cesear Clown to stay on Punk Hazard by giving him his heart in exchange for Monet's. After the events of Punk Hazard, Law held Cesear Clown's heart hostage so that the Straw Hats can control the scientist.

"Personality Switching Surgery" is one of Law's stranger techniques.  He is able to switch the minds and bodies of anyone in his Room similar to physical objects. Back in Punk Hazard, Law used this ability to switch the bodies of Franky, Chopper, Nami, and Sanji.

Like most devil fruit users in the New World, Law has Awakened the Ope-Ope Fruit. In his Awakened state, Law can coat objects in his ROOM, such as his sword, so he can use the full range of his abilities without his opponent needing to remain in his ROOM. Fans saw his strongest attack used at the end of the Big Mom fight, Puncture Willie, which extended his sword to an absurd degree and punctured whoever's in range. He also learned a technique in honor of Rosinate, called Silence, which creates a completely silent field around a person negating all sound in and out of it.

Trafalgar Law has one of the most bizarre, but creative devil fruits in One Piece. Fans know that when Law steps up to fight, it'll never be a boring one even when he's mowing down enemies. Now that his fight against Big Mom is finally over, we've seen just how powerful the Surgeon of Death really is.
