My Dress-Up Darling chief animation director Jun Yamazaki is celebrating the new show's success by releasing key frame drawings and a slightly risqué illustration of the series' heroine, Marin Kitagawa.
Yamazaki posted the images to their personal Twitter. The new illustration is focused on Marin, a young woman who dreams of cosplaying her favorite anime and video game characters. Yamazaki also posted several key frames from Episode 3 of the series, which premiered on Jan. 23. The animation drawings show Marin, alongside the series' main protagonist, Gojo. In addition to My Dress-Up Darling, Yamazaki has worked on a number of popular series, including Neon Genesis Evangelion, Mushishi and Revolutionary Girl Utena.

My Dress-Up Darling tells the story of Wakana Gojo, a timid high school student who has dedicated his life to creating clothing for Hina figures, which are traditional Japanese ornamental dolls that are often seen in the celebration of certain holidays. Due to a past bad experience, Gojo is terrified of sharing his passion with his peers, at least until he meets Marin Kitagawa, a popular and out-going girl who has no reservations about loudly declaring her love for anime, manga and video games. The two develop an unlikely friendship after Kitagawa recruits a reluctant Gojo into helping her achieve her dreams of cosplaying all of her favorite characters.
The series began with a manga created by writer and artist Shinichi Fukuda, which was first published in Square Enix's Young Gangan magazine in 2018. An anime series based on Fukuda's manga debuted on Jan. 9 and was produced by CloverWorks, the animation studio behind Wonder Egg Priority and the controversial animated adaptation of The Promised Neverland. The anime was directed by Keisuke Shinohara, who previously worked on Little Witch Academia and Devilman Crybaby. The series stars Shoya Ishige (Godzilla Singularity Point, Haikyuu!!) as Gojo and Hina Suguta (Bang Dream! Garupa Pico: Omori) as Marin. The anime has been praised for its comedy and the characters' rejection of societal expectations, but has been criticized by some for the show's copious fan-service.
The show is just one of three series that CloverWorks is producing this anime season, with the other two being the colorful action series Tokyo 24th Ward and the slice-of-life series Akebi's Sailor Uniform. The studio is also collaborating with Wit Studio (Ranking of Kings, Vinland Saga) to produce the upcoming anime adaptation of Tatsuya Endo's popular Spy x Family manga.
My Dress-Up Darling is currently being simulcast by Crunchyroll and Funimation, with new episodes premiering every Sunday. The original manga is available in English, in both print and digital formats, from publisher Square Enix.
