With the long-awaited release of the Mob Psycho 100 Season 3 trailer, it seems that more questions have been raised than answered. Quickly cut, the trailer strings together one to two-second snippets of shots from the upcoming season without giving much away. The trailer features the same characters we all know and love, like Reigen, Dimple and most importantly, Ritsu.
For years, Ritsu had an inferiority complex due to his older brother Shigeo's incredible psychic powers. However, back in Season 2, Ritsu unlocked his own set of powers through the use of Dimple and now feels more on a level playing field with his older brother. Although the Season 3 trailer doesn't show too much of anyone besides Mob, it does show an obvious shot of Ritsu in the middle of several action sequences cut together, which suggests that Ritsu could have a different type of role in Season 3.
With Ritsu's newfound psychic powers, he's now able to actively participate in Mob's supernatural world. This could certainly be a possibility in Season 3, given that Mob and Dimple know and acknowledge Ritsu's powers. The single shot we see of Ritsu in the trailer shows his face battered, blood streaming from his mouth. This implies that he's in the middle of a fight scene, with a high probability that he's alongside his brother.
It would be nice to see Ritsu and Mob fighting side by side. Mob wants nothing more than a good relationship with his little brother, and now that the biggest barrier between them is gone, it's possible to see their dynamic grow. Additionally, it would make sense plot-wise to pair them together. As shown in Season 2, Ritsu has no problem using psychic powers on people, given the right circumstance as decided by himself. Mob disagrees with this moral reasoning and urges Ritsu to never use it on people. If they get to spend more time together in Season 3, Mob has more opportunities to teach Ritsu how to probably use and control his new powers.
While the Mob Psycho 100 Season 3 trailer is short, it teases the bigger involvement of a fan-favorite character. It would certainly be satisfying to see Ritsu and Mob grow their relationship, especially now that they can bond over their shared psychic abilities. It's mutually beneficial for all involved if Ritsu becomes more involved -- Mob will have help in dire situations, Ritsu will learn about his powers from the most powerful guy around and most importantly, fans will likely love it. Although nothing is set in stone until the first episode streams, the new trailer definitely teases a bigger role for Ritsu.
Mob Psycho Season 3 is set to premiere in 2022.
