Don't Toy With Me, Miss Nagatoro originally began in 2017 as a web manga by the artist Nanashi. The manga was adapted into an anime series in 2021 by Telecom Animation Film, the animation studio behind the cult-classic Moyashimon: Tales of Agriculture, Phantasy Star Online 2: The Animation, and the upcoming Shenmue anime adaptation from Crunchyroll and Adult Swim. The show was directed by D.N.Angel's Hirokazu Hanai and was written by Taku Kishimoto, a former Studio Ghibli staff member who has also worked on shows such as Haikyuu! and the 2019 adaptation of Natsuki Takaya's Fruits Basket.
The series tells the story of Naota Hachioji, most commonly referred to as simply "Senpai" within the series, an aspiring artist and painfully awkward high school student who randomly meets the loud and out-going Hayase Nagatoro in his school's library one day. After Nagatoro reads the manga Senpai has drawn and mercilessly criticizes it, she takes an interest in teasing the older boy. While their relationship initially seems antagonistic, it eventually develops into a genuine friendship as the two help each other overcome their problems.
The manga has achieved a circulation of over 1 million copies in Japan. The first season of the anime, which originally aired from April until June of 2021, is available for streaming on Crunchyroll.
