The comedic Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid began life as a manga by Coolkyousinnjya back in 2013, spinning out into several offshoots before getting an anime adaptation. This silly series juxtaposes the life of an overworked office lady with the wild antics of her recently adopted dragon-turned-housekeeper.
After some tragic setbacks, Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid S, the anime's second season, is finally on its way to fans. Hitting Japan and streaming services later this summer, here's what viewers should know about the upcoming continuation of Kobayashi's and co.'s scaly adventures.
Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid Season 2's Plot
The wacky antics in Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid involve everyday office worker Kobayashi and her titular reptilian housekeeper. She befriends a dragon girl, named Tohru, after removing a sword from her back in dragon form. From there, Tohru transforms into a humanoid girl and elects to stay with Kobayashi, earning her keep as a maid. Unfortunately, she makes as many messes as she cleans, attracting various problems to Kobayashi's doorstep.
The show's second season will continue with these comedic adventures while also introducing more of Tohru's species to the mix. While this is a recipe for hilarious disaster, one dragon's presence in particular could spell doom for the (relative) peace of Tohru and Kobayashi's lives.
Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid Season 2 Trailer
A teaser trailer for the show's second season was recently put online, giving a look back at what the show has been about so far while also giving a glimpse of what's to come. Spotted throughout are Tohru's fellow dragons Fafnir, Lacoa, Kanna and Elma, who all engage in uproarious and raucous shenanigans involving battles and love. It also showcases the new logo for the season's expanded title, which is Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid S. The "S" stands for "Super Supreme Second life Starts," though this is more than likely just to be silly and differentiate from the first season.
Why Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid Season 2 Was Delayed
The series' second season was originally announced in 2019, and there's a rather tragic reason for its delayed release. The show is produced by Kyoto Animation, with the first season directed by Yasuhiro Takemoto. Besides Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid, Takemoto had worked on other shows including Air, Haruhi Suzumiya and Lucky Star. Unfortunately, he was one of several victims of the 2019 Kyoto Animation arson incident, which killed a total of 36 people and injured 33. Combined with a global pandemic, this pushed the series' continuation back considerably from its planned production and release.
Kyoto Animation is once again going to handle the show, with most of the staff returning. Tatsuya Ishihara is the new director, though Takemoto retains his posthumous credit on the series. Yuka Yamada, Masumi Ito, Miku Kadowaki and Nobuaki Maruki are all returning to respectively supervise scripts, compose the music, design the characters and direct animation. The music will continue the first season's trend of catchy tunes, with the opening, "Ai no Supreme!," being supplied by the band Fhána. Likewise, Super Chorogons will provide the ending theme, "Maid With Dragons."
Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid Season 2 Release Date
With footage shown and music already primed for the second season, it's no surprise that it'll be hitting the silver screen in the very near future. Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid S will be premiering in Japan next month on July 7th, finally quenching the thirst of fans desperate for more outlandish dragon adventures.
Crunchyroll, which hosts the show's first season, has also confirmed that it will be streaming the show simultaneously for viewers outside of Japan. With that being said, newcomers wanting to get into the series or existing fans who want to go back and watch the first season have only a few weeks to get to it before the dragon antics kick up again.
