Millionaire Detective Introduces a Kambe Family Murder Mystery

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Episode 6 of The Millionaire Detective Balance: Unlimited, "Ill Got, Ill Spent" now streaming on Funimation.

More questions are raised than answered in the latest episode of Millionaire Detective. Tensions ramp up as Daisuke investigates his family's connections with the bomb threat in the panic room earlier. With HEUSC being its unhelpful self when Daisuke needs it most, Daisuke has to rely on other means of getting information, including an unlikely ally. There's a connection between the company who made the components of the bomb and Daisuke's family -- they just have to figure out what it is. However, if it looks like even the millionaire detective has run into a brick wall, how can they solve this case?

Haru Out

Because the suspect, Ricardo, died during the investigation process, the Modern Crimes team undergo an inquiry by the justice department. Although his team appeared supportive, as soon as they hear they may lose their jobs, their fingers immediately point at Haru, who is taken off the case.

Chosuke is launching his own investigation into Mizuo Future Technologies, the company that may be responsible for developing the radio jamming device and the toxic gas cartridge. Chosuke's colleague tells him that an odd green seagrape substance that is being used as classified military technology may be what's being used to cause both the wireless and wire interferences. Chosuke's friend warns him not to get in too deep.

During dinner, Chosuke tells Haru that he wants to solve a cold case related to Mizuo before he retires and asks Haru if he wants to help. Haru accepts, and the two of them confront Imura for answers about the sea grapes substance. She remains tight-lipped, leaving them no choice but to leave.

Dirty Justice

Imura gets into her fancy car and drives off, not noticing one of Daisuke's gadgets is following her. Suddenly, her car speeds up t0 120km/h without any way to slow down. Careening into a parking lot, her car slams into a passerby. Daisuke is close behind and arrests her for reckless driving and killing the passerby. As she gets into his car to be taken to the police station, Daisuke switches off the gadget so the illusion in her windshield disappears.

He seizes the opportunity to interrogate her about the bomb. He asks who's in charge of making the cartridge, the material, if the company was using Poliador Kambe Ltd. to illegally import it and if she knows Shigemaru Kambe, all the while ignoring her demands for a lawyer. When she refuses to talk, he goes through her laptop and unlocks almost all of her files with HEUSC. Daisuke asks HEUSC to open a file called ADM, but the AI butler says he's not authorized.

A Clash of Ideals

Haru confronts Daisuke at the staircase and asks him why he's going to such lengths. He admits that though he disagrees with how he operates, he has faith in Daisuke catching criminals. Daisuke tells him to stay out of it. It's interesting that this is in the same locations Haru once said that someone like Daisuke shouldn't be a cop, and yet he's in a completely different place now, having worked with Daisuke for some time and realizing he's not as bad as he seems.

Meanwhile, the director tells Chosuke to retire quietly and not meddle anymore, but Chosuke tells Haru that exposing Imura's secrets is justice. Chosuke lies to Imura that her lawyer is there and takes her to another room devoid of surveillance cameras. He almost successfully blackmails her into talking using photos of her son doing drugs. She gives up and asks to call her boss before talking.

Satisfied, Chosuke leaves the room to see Haru waiting and tells him the only way for justice to prevail is to get your hands dirty. Haru tells him that he can't accept this underhanded way of doing it. Frustration boiling over, Chosuke explodes on Haru, but Haru lets Imura out.

A Kambe Murder Cold Case

Imura and her lawyer leave and are about to leave in her car when she notices something wrong with the battery. The car starts smoking and the door is locked. A few seconds later, the car explodes and bursts into flames, killing the two inside. Chosuke finds Daisuke on the rooftop smoking a cigar.

Haru confronts the director of the Modern Crimes department, demanding to know why Chosuke is doing this. With a grim face, the director opens Chosuke's locker and reveals a wooden panel written "Sayuri Kambe Murder Case/Investigation Headquarters." It's unclear who orchestrated the explosion. Was it was her company or the Kambe family? One thing's for certain: finding out who Sayuri Kambe's murderer may finally unravel the mysteries that surround Daisuke.

This episode, Daisuke spent close to 270 billion yen.
