A new animated teaser for Marvel's Avengers explains the traumatic multiversal origin story of the game's newest hero, The Mighty Thor -- Jane Foster.
Foster's arrival in Marvel's Avengers has been teased for some time, but The Mighty Thor: Out of Time, an animated short uploaded to the official Marvel's Avengers Twitter account, is the best look at the character yet. Outlining Foster's story from the comics, the trailer reminds the audience of Foster's battle with more than just the forces of evil -- The Mighty Thor is also struggling with breast cancer. While Marvel fans have been familiar with that aspect of Foster's story for a few years now, the rest of the trailer tells a much less familiar tale.
In Marvel's Avengers, Foster is a visitor from another dimension. In her timeline, Odin went mad with grief for his missing son. Foster was unable to stop Odin without the help of Loki, who killed the Allfather on her behalf but sent her hurtling through the multiverse and into the world of Marvel's Avengers, where she is expected to make her playable debut.
Marvel's Avengers isn't the only upcoming story with a brand new Thor. The next entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Thor: Love and Thunder, will introduce its own take on Foster's stint as one of Earth's Mightiest Heroes. Meanwhile, where comics are concerned, Jane Foster & The Mighty Thor is currently set to bring both of Marvel Comics' Thors together for a new adventure.
The Mighty Thor's arrival in Marvel's Avengers comes during an especially tumultuous time in the online game's life cycle. The game's developer, Crystal Dynamics, was recently sold by parent company Square Enix to Embracer Group. That acquisition presented a significant roadblock for the game, but even prior to the merger, Marvel's Avengers' roadmap was reportedly significantly altered to account for the game's relatively low earnings. That alteration doesn't seem to have impacted the release of the latest incarnation of Thor.
The Mighty Thor will be playable in Marvel's Avengers on June 28. Marvel's Avengers is available on PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Microsoft Windows and Google Stadia.
