The second season of Magia Record: Puella Magi Madoka Magica Side Story will premiere this summer, with many of the original season's cast and crew reprising their roles.
According to Anime News Network, the official website for Magia Record has confirmed that the second season of the anime will debut this summer. Alongside a new promo image depicting the show's cast of magical girls, the announcement confirmed that Doroinu, of the animation troupe Gekidan Inu Curry, will once again return as the chief director and handle script supervisor duties. Akiyuki Simbo, who directed the original Puella Magi Madoka Magica anime, is returning to the franchise to serve as this season's animation supervisor. This season will be animated by the production studio SHAFT.
Magia Record: Puella Magi Madoka Magica Side Story tells the story of a group of magical girls who are all drawn to the city of Kamihara by a strange power. The series is set in the same continuity as Puella Magi Madoka Magica, and is based on a tactical-RPG by Aniplex that was released for Android and iOS devices. In June 2019, two years after the game's release in Japan, Magia Record was localized and released in the United States. While the pre-launch registration campaign drew in over 25,000 users, the U.S. version of the game was ultimately shut down less than six months later.
The original Madoka Magica anime was one of the surprise hits of 2011, receiving widespread critical acclaim and popularity for its complex storytelling and subversion of traditional genre tropes. Following the success of the original anime, the franchise expanded with multiple films, video games, manga adaptations, novelizations and spinoffs.
The first season of Magia Record: Puella Magi Madoka Magica Side Story is currently available for streaming on Crunchyroll, Funimation and HiDive.
