- Summary
- The film finds Thor (Chris Hemsworth) on a journey unlike anything he’s ever faced – a quest for inner peace. But his retirement is interrupted by a galactic killer known as Gorr the God Butcher (Christian Bale), who seeks the extinction of the gods. To combat the threat, Thor enlists the help of King Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), Korg (Taika Waititi) and ex-girlfriend Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), who – to Thor’s surprise – inexplicably wields his magical hammer, Mjolnir, as the Mighty Thor. Together, they embark upon a harrowing cosmic adventure to uncover the mystery of the God Butcher’s vengeance and stop him before it’s too late. Directed by Waititi (“Thor: Ragnarok,” “Jojo Rabbit”) and produced by Kevin Feige and Brad Winderbaum, “Thor: Love and Thunder” opens in theaters July 8, 2022.

The latest image from Thor: Love and Thunder gives fans a bold new look at the God of Thunder wielding his second enchanted hammer, Stormbreaker.
The image, courtesy of Entertainment Weekly, sees Chris Hemsworth's Thor in the midst of apparent chaos. While a building burns and crowds rush off behind him, Thor stands firm, albeit clearly concerned with Stormbreaker in hand.
"What I didn't want to do is just make Ragnarok again, because that's been done," director Taika Waititi explained. "I needed to do something more interesting for myself to keep the whole thing ignited and to make sure that I'm feeling creatively stimulated. I thought, What's the least expected thing with this franchise?"
Waititi added that the upcoming film is "Sort of like a midlife crisis film, really. That's the question we ask everyone: Are we doing the right thing, and are we doing all we can in the world? I think right now, while the world is still healing from this pandemic, it's a good question to ask. It's like, well, are we doing enough to look after each other and to look after ourselves?"
The fourth entry in the series will mark the introductions of both Christian Bale as Gorr the God Butcher and Russell Crowe as Zeus, the latter of whom the director has been rather tight-lipped about. While Waititi described Bale's take on his character as "One of the best villains that Marvel's had in their films," regarding Crowe's role he merely stated that will be "a way you've never seen Russell before."
Thor: Love and Thunder will also see the return of Natalie Portman to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, reprising her role as Jane Foster as well as stepping into the God of Thunder's shoes for the first time in the MCU. Fans have already been given glimpses of Portman's Thor wielding Mjolnir for herself, most recently alongside her Asgardian predecessor. The presence of two Thors alongside two separate Asgardian hammers has already sparked plenty of speculation surrounding where the film will leave Mjolnir and Stormbreaker respectively. Following the destruction of Mjolnir at the hands of Cate Blanchett's Hela in 2017's Thor: Ragnarok, Stormbreaker was forged as the God of Thunder's replacement hammer. As for Mjolnir, signs so far point towards the returning hammer having been reforged from its original pieces.
Fans can find out for themselves where the hammers will land when Thor: Love and Thunder hits theaters on July 8.
