Shanghai's life-size model of the ZGMF-X10A Freedom Gundam from Mobile Suit Gundam SEED is now open to the viewing public.
The 18.03-meter-tall statue (about 60 feet) of Kira Yamato's mobile suit, located in front of the Mitsui Shopping Park LaLaport Jinqiao, had its head attached by a crane on Wednesday, as reported by Anime News Network. An official opening ceremony will be held a month later on May 28 and streamed throughout China on the Bilibili streaming service.
This is the first of Sunrise's life-size Gundam statues to be put up outside of Japan, but Gundam fans in Japan can still celebrate by ordering new merchandise from Premium Bandai's "Freedom Gundam Ver. GCP Popup Shop" online.
Three previous models have been made for the Life-Size Gundam Statue Project. The first life-size statue of the RX-78-2 Gundam from the original Mobile Suit Gundam was put up in Odaiba in 2017. It was replaced in 2017 with a statue of the RX-0 Unicorn Gundam from Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn, which can light up and transform. Last year, a moving model of the RX-78-2 Gundam made its debut in Yokohama.
Mobile Suit Gundam SEED is available for streaming in the United States on Hulu, Crunchyroll, Funimation and the official GundamInfo YouTube channel.
