Konosuba is a series that's name is frequently on the lips of isekai fans. Featuring many of the genre's fantasy and video game-based tropes, the series has used this to its advantage and become a sprawling multimedia franchise. The most prominent of these has been an anime series, which introduced many people to Konosuba in the first place.
It's been a few years since both the Konosuba anime and movie continuation, but a third season or similar sequel could soon be releasing. With that in mind, here's more of what the franchise is about and how soon fans can expect to see more Konosuba on the big or small screen.
The Plot & Origin of Konosuba
Konosuba, as you'd expect for isekai, deals initially with the death of the protagonist Kazuma Sato, who is subsequently given the chance to reincarnate in a world inspired by MMORPGs. He chooses to do so and also be accompanied by the goddess Aqua, who turns out to be rather ditzy in nature. They form a party to be able to eventually fight the evil Devil King, but Kazuma's choices and ambitions instead reflect a desire to truly make a new life for himself in this new world.
The series is the creation of Natsume Akatsuki, who started the series as a web novel before it became a light novel. The light novel version of Konosuba features many differences from the original's plot, however. Those lasted for 17 volumes, running from 2013-20, while a spinoff based around party member Megumin had three volumes. Other light novels, as well as manga adaptations, came out in the following years, with an anime adaptation finally releasing in 2016.
When Will Season 3 of Konosuba Be Released?
The Konosuba anime was handled by Studio Deen and released in 2016, while Season 2 would come out soon afterward in 2017. The English dubs, however, wouldn't see a Western release until 2019 and 2020. Since then, though, there hasn't been a third season. This makes sense, to a certain extent, at the time of the first two seasons' release dates as the first two seasons adapted the first four volumes of the light novels, with the fifth volume only being completed after the second season came out.
KonoSuba: God's Blessing on This Wonderful World! Legend of Crimson, a film continuation of the anime, also came out in 2019. This adapted the fifth volume of the light novels, continuing the story and paving the way for the show to eventually come back and finish adapting the remaining 12 volumes. It was recently confirmed that a new Konosuba anime project is now in the works, though there's no official word on when it will release or what form it will take.
Given the wording of it being a new "anime project," it could be an OVA, a third season or another movie, possibly one that officially ends the adaptation series. This project probably won't be released until late next year at the soonest, especially with anime production still being impacted by the global COVID-19 pandemic. This means that fans will have to read the manga or the light novels in order to sate their taste for more Konosuba in the meantime.
