The world of Japanese animation is bigger and better than ever, and anime fans can stream their favorite series on a variety of platforms, with Crunchyroll and Funimation being the two most popular dedicated streaming services for anime. However, someone looking for a new show to binge can find plenty of anime on more general-purpose platforms such as Hulu, Amazon Prime Video and of course, the streaming giant Netflix.
Netflix recently upped its anime game, and it can finally compete with Crunchyroll and Funimation with its impressively large and diverse catalog of anime to watch, including heavy-hitting titles like One Piece, Bleach and Demon Slayer. Meanwhile, fans of anime shows set in high school can find plenty to watch on Netflix as well, as this platform has many solid options to choose from.
Komi Can't Communicate Is A Rom-Com Gem
The hit rom-com anime series Komi Can't Communicate was a smash hit in 2021, and the series is set to return to Netflix for a second season in the Spring 2022 anime season. This charming high school anime series features the dandere heroine Komi Shoko, a beautiful but shy girl who has a communication disorder.
Komi made it her goal to make 100 friends before graduation, and her social life was transformed when she met her plain but kind classmate Tadano Hitohito, who helped her start making new friends at last. Komi's adventure is a cheerful and amusing slice-of-life high school adventure, mainly taking place in Itan High School and a few attractions around town, such as ramen shops or outdoor pools. Komi's new life has just begun.
Kakegurui Raises The Stakes At A Private High School
The gambling anime series Kakegurui takes place in high school, but it's a whole different animal than shows like Komi Can't Communicate or Nisekoi. At Hyakkou private academy, the sons and daughters of society's elite learn the ways of high-stakes gambling, betting entire fortunes daily in fierce competition over dice, cards and roulette tables.
However, this tradition-bound school is turned upside down when the flamboyant troublemaker Jabami Yumeko transfers in -- a wild and hedonistic girl who's after just one thing: the primal, borderline erotic thrill of gambling in its truest form. She doesn't want fame or fortune -- she wants excitement, and Hyakkou will certainly never be the same again.
Rascal Does Not Dream Of Bunny Girl Senpai Hits Anime Fans In The Feels
The short but popular anime series Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai is more than just a high school anime -- it's a dramatic and slightly supernatural exploration of what it means to face one's inner demons and try to grow up as a person. The protagonist is a high school student named Azusagawa Sakuta who meets a quiet girl named Mai, who is inexplicably dressed like a bunny girl in the middle of the library, although no one seems to notice her.
Sakuta and Mai soon become friends at school, and they vow to help other people suffering what they call "adolescent syndrome," including Sakuta's cheerful but shy little sister, the shut-in Kaede. The sight of a bunny girl in the library may seem silly, but Sakuta's and Mai's adventure soon takes a more dramatic turn, and their lives will be forever changed.
Monthly Girls' Nozaki-Kun Is All About Shojo Manga
Monthly Girls' Nozaki-Kun is an anime series taking place in high school, although the titular Nozaki Umetaro hardly has his mind on homework or lectures. He's more fixated on his serialized shojo manga series Let's Fall in Love, and he could use some help. He unwittingly turns down his admirer Sakura Chiyo, but he does gladly recruit her as the newest assistant in his home studio, and Chiyo is happy to simply spend time around the oh-so-cool Nozaki and help him make a wonderful manga for fans to enjoy.
Along the way, this odd pair get caught up in all kinds of hijinks at school with their friends and classmates, and best of all, Nozaki can use these antics as inspiration for new chapters in his manga series -- although his editor won't always like what Nozaki comes up with.
Toradora! Stars The Palm-Top Tiger, Aisaka Taiga
Toradora! remains one of the most popular and renowned high school anime shows out there, and while the series features plenty of comedy and adventure, it can also be dramatic, tense and even heartbreaking at times, although things will likely work out in the end. The star is the kind Takasu Ryuji, who nurses a crush on his energetic classmate Minori, and he'll need the aid of the tiny but tough tsundere Aisaka Taiga to win Minori's heart.
However, before long, Ryuji and Taiga realize that they actually have feelings for one another instead. This tricky love triangle won't be so easy to resolve, and someone might get their feelings hurt along the way. Still, that's all a part of growing up and learning the ways of love.
