Jujutsu Kaisen: [SPOILER]’s Early Death is Surprising – But Only Temporary

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Episode 5 of Jujutsu Kaisen, "Curse Womb Must Die -II-," now streaming on Crunchyroll.

Jujutsu Kaisen's Yuji Itadori becomes the shonen series' first character to bite the dust, but thankfully this tangle with death looks to be a temporary one. After Sukuna holds Itadori's body hostage, the young Jujutsu Sorcerer decides to end his own life by taking back control while his heart is outside his body.

Frustrated by his usual inability to possess Itadori's body, Sukuna takes full advantage of his surprising freedom by challenging Megumi Fushiguro to a fight in Jujutsu Kaisen Episode 5. However, to prevent Itadori from suddenly taking back control, Sukuna pulls at literal heartstrings by gruesomely ripping Itadori's heart out of his chest. Fushiguro correctly predicts that Sukuna's preventative measure won't stop Itadori from returning, who ultimately decides to seal his fate.

Fushiguro Stands Against The King of Curses: Sukuna

Fushiguro impresses an unfazed Sukuna during their clash with his Ten Shadows Technique, and while it appeared as though Fushiguro had one final ace up his sleeve, Itadori returns instead. The two Jujutsu Sorcerers share a final moment, each acknowledging the other's convictions for saving people before Itadori collapses, telling him to live a long life.

Glimpses of Fushiguro's past reveals his strained relationship with an absentee father and also a woman named Tsumiki who, at some point, was cursed. Fushiguro regarded Tsumiki as a good person deserving of happiness, so her unfair circumstance is a powerful motivator for him to help others. Later, as Kugisaki and Fushiguro mourn the loss of their friend, they are approached by their Jujutsu Tech classmates.

Jujutsu Tech's Upperclassmen Students Arrive

Among the introduced 2nd-years are Maki Zenin, Toge Inumaki and Panda --  a talking panda -- who ask Fushiguro and Kugisaki to participate in the school's annual "Kyoto Sister School Exchange Event." The competitive event pits the Kyoto and Tokyo branches of Jujutsu Tech against one another, testing their respective students' abilities. To grow stronger in memory of their fallen friend, Fushiguro and Kugisaki agree to take part.

While Panda -- who is, again, a talking panda -- is visually the standout addition, Maki and Inumaki -- who can only speak in rice ball ingredients because he's a Cursed Speech user -- round out the series' growing cast of exciting characters. Plus, it's only a matter of time before several other exciting sorcerers explode onto the scene with an impending tournament-style arc. Not only will the cast expand to Jujutsu Tech's other campus, but fans will get to see just what each student is capable of. After all, what's a Weekly Shonen Jump series without a solid tournament arc to get fans excited?

Geto & the Cursed Spirits

Meanwhile, a group of Cursed Spirits and a mysterious man named Geto hold a meeting to discuss a plan to eliminate humans. Geto explains that they'll need to remove Satoru Gojo from the equation for their plan to work and will need to recruit Itadori/Sukuna to their side. Geto then reveals to the confused Cursed Spirits that he believes Itadori is still alive despite what his friends think.

Jujutsu Kaisen Episode 5 ends at the morgue, where Gojo discusses his belief that Itadori was set up by the Jujutsu higher-ups to remove the threat of Sukuna and voices his frustration that it happened while he was away. He's joined by Ieiri, who will be conducting Itadori's autopsy to glean as much information about Sukuna's vessel as possible. Unknown to them, Sukuna welcomes Itadori to his Domain for an ominous chat between Curse and vessel.
