A second season of Jujutsu Kaisen has yet to be confirmed by any of the companies involved with its production, but the president of a major Japanese TV channel reassured fans that there's more to come.
As reported by Mantan Web, Keiichi Mimura, the president of Japanese TV network MBS, mentioned the popular anime during a press conference that discussed the channel's future plans. While Mimura couldn't officially announce anything, the TV exec did confirm that it is being worked on. "I'm sure we can develop something that will meet your expectations. But, I would appreciate it if you could please be patient with me while we are hammering out the concrete details," they said. Mimura praised the series, calling it one of the network's "greatest works," and went into detail about how the company's gross profits increased by 171% thanks to the series' breakthrough popularity.
Jujutsu Kaisen is currently one of Japan's most biggest anime and manga franchises. Gege Akutami's original work was the best-selling manga series in the country in 2021, moving over 30 million copies in the last 12 months. Despite only being three years old, the series is already one of the best selling manga series of all time with a total worldwide circulation of 60 million copies.
An anime adaptation, produced by Yuri!! on Ice and Attack on Titan: The Final Season animation studio MAPPA, completed its first season in early 2021 and received a similarly positive reception. The series' first animated movie, Jujutsu Kaisen 0, premiered in Japan on Dec. 24 with the second-best opening weekend in Japanese movie history. The movie has pulled in 8.5 billion yen (about $75 million USD) in less than a month, and is currently outpacing the performance of Japan's highest grossing film of 2021, Evangelion 3.0 + 1.0: Thrice Upon A Time. While a second season of the anime seems to be an inevitability, it has yet to be officially confirmed by MAPPA or the manga's publisher, Shueisha. Other similarly popular anime series, such as My Hero Academia and Komi Can't Communicate, usually announce new seasons just before or shortly after the completion of their current season, but so far, no anime projects for the series have been confirmed to follow Jujutsu Kaisen 0.
An international release for Jujutsu Kaisen 0 has yet to be announced. The first season of the anime series is available for streaming from Crunchyroll and Funimation. Gege Akutami's original manga is available in English from VIZ Media.
