Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 Confirmed for 2023

Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 is officially on the way.

The new season of the TV anime was announced during a special screening of the Jujutsu Kaisen 0 prequel movie in Japan on Feb. 12. The show's highly anticipated return is currently scheduled with a premiere window of 2023. The announcement panel featured appearances from several voice actors from the movie and TV series, including voice actor Megumi Ogata, who voices the movie's protagonist, Yuta Okkotsu, and Kana Hanizawa, who portrays Yuta's childhood friend turned Curse, Rika Orimoto. Yuichi Nakamura, the voice of the powerful sorcerer and teacher Satoru Gojo, as well as Takahiro Sakurai, who voices the villainous Suguru Geto, also participated in the panel.

In addition to confirming the continuation of the TV series, the panel also unveiled new art from series creator Gege Akutami, which depicts Yuta and Rika's Curse. The artwork was created to celebrate the runaway success of Jujutsu Kaisen 0, which is now Japan's highest grossing film of 2021. The prequel movie premiered in the region on Dec. 24 to the second-best opening weekend in Japanese film history and has earned over 10.4 billion yen (about $90 million USD) since then. The movie was directed by Sunghoo Park, who also helmed the first season of the Jujutsu Kaisen anime. Crunchyroll has announced that it will distribute the film in North America, giving it a theatrical release on March 13.

Jujutsu Kaisen tells the story of Yuji Itadori, a kind but bizarrely strong high school student who accidentally becomes the vessel for the soul of Ryomen Sukuna, a powerful but malicious sorcerer. Yuji is then enrolled in Jujutsu High, a special high school for sorcerers, so that he can learn to control his newfound powers and use them to battle against beings known as Curses, which are hostile spirits born from the negative emotions of humanity. The Jujutsu Kaisen 0 prequel movie takes place a year before the events of the show, and tells the story of a different protagonist, Yuta Okkotsu, who becomes haunted by the dangerously overprotective Curse of his childhood sweetheart after she tragically passes away.

The series was created by Akutami in 2017. The series has rapidly become one of the most popular anime and manga franchises currently running, with over 60 million copies in circulation around the world, and managed to become Japan's best-selling manga series in 2021. The manga is available in English in both print and digital formats from VIZ Media, while the anime series is available for streaming on Crunchyroll and Funimation.
