Jujutsu Kaisen 0 Trailer Offers Summons Another Glimpse of Japan’s Latest Anime Blockbuster

A new Jujutsu Kaisen 0 promotional video has been released.

The latest preview for the prequel movie is short, but shows off a few brief shots that weren't seen in previous trailers, including a new shot of the movie's villain, Suguru Geto, using a familiar weapon against the movie's main hero, Yuta Okkotsu, and his Curse, Rika. The trailer is set to the song "Ichizu" by Japanese rock group King Gnu.

The first movie in the Jujutsu Kaisen 0 premiered on Dec. 24. The prequel film had the second-best opening weekend in Japanese history and has managed to pull in over 9.3 billion yen (about $81 million USD) in its first month of release. For comparison, last year's highest grossing movie in Japan, Evangelion 3.0 + 1.0: Thrice Upon a Time, earned 10 billion yen (approximately $89.5 million USD) during its entire multi-month theatrical run. Distributor Toho Co. Ltd. originally announced that it was projecting a total gross of 10 billion yen for the Jujutsu Kaisen movie in its lifetime, though it now seems almost guaranteed to surpass that amount.

Jujutsu Kaisen 0 takes place one year before the events of the anime series, which premiered in early 2021. Since it is set before the show's first episode, it does not feature the series' usual protagonist, Yuji Itadori. Instead, the prequel tells the story of Yuta Okkotsu, a young man who is haunted by the spirit of his childhood sweetheart, Rika Orimoto. Rika's soul has been transformed into a Curse, a violent monster that feeds off of the negative emotions of humanity. In order to get Rika's Curse under control, Yuji is brought to the mysterious Jujutsu High, a school for sorcerers, but his new education is interrupted when he is drawn into the conflict between his new teacher, Satoru Gojo, and the vengeful sorcerer Suguru Geto.

Jujutsu Kaisen was originally created by manga artist and writer Gege Akutami in 2018. The series has rapidly become one of Japan's biggest entertainment properties, with the manga achieving a circulation of over 60 million copies in just under four years. The anime adaptation of the series was produced at MAPPA, the animation studio behind Attack on Titan: The Final Season and Yuri!! on Ice. Both the TV series and the prequel movie were directed by Sunghoo Park, who previously worked on God of High School. The manga is available in English in both print and digital formats from VIZ Media, while the anime series is available for streaming on Crunchyroll and Funimation. A release outside of Japan for the movie has yet to be announced.
