Jane Foster Claims Mjolnir in First Thor: Love and Thunder Clip

Whosoever holds this hammer, if she be worthy, shall possess the power of Thor.

Revealed during the MTV Movie & TV Awards, the first official clip from Marvel Studios' Thor: Love and Thunder sees Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) claim the legendary hammer Mjolnir as her own. While this moment has been seen in both Love and Thunder trailers so far, the clip offers a bit more context, showing Thor Odinson (Chris Hemsworth) elated to see the repaired Mjolnir return, only to be stunned into silence when he realizes the weapon has a new wielder in the form of his ex-lover.

Due for release on July 8 and directed by Thor: Ragnarok helmer Taika Waititi, Love and Thunder takes cues from the 2014 iteration of Marvel Comics' Thor series, which was quickly followed up by Mighty Thor. During this run, Thor Odinson was deemed unworthy of wielding Mjolnir, leaving Jane Foster to pick up the hammer and take over as the "Mighty Thor." The original Thor eventually reclaimed his birthright, though Jane's Asgardian adventures have continued.

As far as the Marvel Cinematic Universe is concerned, both Hemsworth's Thor and Portman's Jane were introduced in the 2011 film Thor. Both returned in 2013's Thor: The Dark World, though while Thor himself has been in many projects since, Jane has largely been MIA, with Portman only making a cameo via Dark World archive footage in 2019's Avengers: Endgame. In Love and Thunder, however, she's finally back -- in a major way, no less.

Regarding Mjolnir, Thor's weapon of choice was destroyed by his villainous older sister, Hela (Cate Blanchett), in 2017's Ragnarok. The God of Thunder received a new weapon, Stormbreaker, in 2018's Avengers: Infinity War. In Endgame, Thor retrieved Mjolnir from an alternate timeline, though Steve Rogers/Captain America (Chris Evans) eventually returned it to its rightful place. Nevertheless, Love and Thunder's promotional footage and merchandise make it clear that the MCU's original Mjolnir has been reforged, thus setting the stage for Jane to carry it into battle.

See Natalie Portman's Jane Foster become the Mighty Thor in Thor: Love and Thunder, in theaters Friday, July 8.
