A Dragon Ball fan has created a Goku animation using a surprising medium - a dyed Frisbee golf disc.
The animated disc comes from an artist who is known on Reddit under the screen name Japamu8. The artist used stencils, dye and golf disc to create what's known as a phenakistiscope, which is basically a device that can be used to display an early form of animation. When the spinning disc is recorded using a camera with a 30 frame-per-second refresh rate, the images on it will display a smoothly moving image, which in this case is a looping animation of a young Goku running in circles.
While it might not be Dragon Ball's most famous disc, fans can pick up this unique piece of Goku art for themselves: the anime-themed golf disc is just one of several customized discs that Japamu8 is selling on their Etsy store for $65.00 USD.
Dragon Ball fans looking for more unique art of Goku and company should also check out the Dragon Ball Super Gallery project. The project is being hosted by Weekly Shonen Jump publisher Shueisha, and sees an elite selection of Japan's most famous manga creators each redrawing one of the original Dragon Ball manga's 42 volume covers. The most recent entry in the series was created by Spy x Family creator Tatsuya Endo. The project has also featured art from Naruto creator Masashi Kishimoto, Bleach's Tite Kubo, Chainsaw Man creator Tatsuki Fujimoto, and Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba's Koyoharu Gotouge. Shueisha started the project to build up excitement for the upcoming 40th anniversary of Dragon Ball's original debut, which will occur in November 2024. The publisher will release a new cover every month until then.
Dragon Ball was created by Akira Toriyama and first appeared in the pages of Weekly Shonen Jump in 1984. The martial arts epic is widely regarded as a foundational work for the modern shonen battle genre, and is the third best-selling manga series of all time, with an estimated 300 million copies in circulation worldwide. Goku's adventures have continued to this day with the on-going Dragon Ball Super manga, which is still overseen by Toriyama himself and features art by his protégé, Toyotarou. The franchise will release its newest movie, entitled Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, in Japan this April, with a North American release scheduled for the summer of 2022.
