A new trailer and poster have been released to promote the upcoming Japanese premiere of Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045 - Sustainable Warfare, a compilation film based on the anime of the same name.
The new trailer was posted by the official Bandai Namco Arts YouTube channel. SAC_2045 - Sustainable Warfare is a compilation movie that uses footage from the Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045 anime series and condenses the events of its 12-episode first season down into a single movie. Russian artist Ilya Kushinov, who served as a character designer for the original TV series, created a new illustration of the series' protagonist, the cyber crimes agent Motoko Kusanagi, for the movie's poster. The movie will also feature a new Dolby Atmos mix of Millenium Parade's theme song, "Fly With Me."
Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045 was originally released on Netflix in 2020. The CG-animated series is set in the same continuity as Production I.G.'s acclaimed 2002 Stand Alone Complex TV series. Stand Alone Complex's Kenji Kamiyama returned to direct the series, alongside Appleseed and Fullmetal Alchemist's Shinji Aramaki. A second season of the anime is in production and is currently scheduled for a 2022 premiere. Kamiyama and Aramaki have also teamed up once again to work on another cyberpunk CG-anime, Blade Runner: Black Lotus. The new show is set in between the events of the original Blade Runner movie and its 2017 sequel, Blade Runner 2049. The series was co-produced by Crunchyroll and Adult Swim, and will premiere on Nov. 13.
Ghost in the Shell began as a manga series created by Masamune Shirow. The franchise gained international attention in 1995 with the release of the animated movie adaptation by director Mamoru Oshii. Since then, the series has been adapted into anime and other mediums multiple times. The cyberpunk series takes place in a near-future society where cybernetic enhancements have become common place and the line between human and machine are becoming increasingly blurred. The story focuses on Motoko Kusanagi, a cybernetically enhanced agent of Japan's cyber-crimes division.
The series was adapted into a 2017 live-action film by Paramount Pictures. Scarlett Johansson was controversially cast in the role of Major Kusanagi, which prompted a renewed debate about Hollywood's whitewashing of Asian roles and characters. The movie was ultimately released to mixed reviews and underperformed at the box office.
An international release for Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045 - Sustainable Warfare has not been announced at this time.
