Funimation announced it's kicking off Hispanic Heritage Month two weeks early by releasing 1,000-plus hours of anime featuring Spanish subtitles and dubbing.
"Funimation is dedicated to serving anime fans wherever, and however they want, and that includes our audience who prefers Spanish," said Rahul Purini, Chief Operating Officer for Funimation Global Group. "The stories and themes that anime conveys are universal, and Funimation knows that Hispanic and Latino audiences love their anime. The addition to our content library is just one of the ways we are celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month."
As part of the celebration, Funimation is releasing more than 1,000 new episodes in Spanish and Portuguese with subtitles and more than 600-plus episodes dubbed in Spanish and Portuguese. Among the popular titles available in Spanish and Portuguese are My Hero Academia, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, Attack on Titan, Cowboy Bebop, Fullmetal Alchemist, Wonder Egg Priority, SK8 the Infinity, Higurashi: When They Cry and Akudama Drive.
"I am SO SO excited that the Latin anime community can experience their favorite shows dubbed in Spanish," said Anairis Quinones, voice of Mirko in My Hero Academia. "Our community has loved anime for the longest time and is a huge supporter of anime. I'm happy that the industry can give back with more opportunities to experience anime and even be a part of it! Keep an eye out for My Hero Academia's Spanish dub! ¡¡Plus ultra!!"
Emily Fajardo, the voice of Eua in Higurashi: When They Cry - GOU, added, "Growing up watching English dubs of anime, it was rare to see any Latino voice actors in the credits, let alone Latino voice directors. I couldn't be more grateful for the opportunity to direct and act in dubs and to help make anime more accessible to people from all different backgrounds."
In related anime news, it was recently revealed that My Hero Academia will shift away from the storyline following Deku's journey to becoming the greatest Hero. Deku appeared to foreshadow this shift in the final moments of Chapter #324, with the words, "The story of how we all became the greatest Heroes.”
While Hispanic Heritage Month takes place Sept. 15 - Oct. 15, Funimation started rolling out Spanish and Portuguese subtitles and dubbed episodes to audiences in both the United States and Canada earlier this year.
