A new music video for Fruits Basket -Prelude-'s theme song has been released.
The music video for the song "Niji to Kaito" (translated as "Rainbow and Kite") by the Japanese band ohashiTrio features a few glimpses of the brand new content the compilation movie. While the movie is mostly a retelling of the 2019 anime series, it features new prequel and epilogue scenes. The prequel story concentrates on Kyoko and Katsuya Honda, the parents of protagonist Tohru, who are both deceased by the time the main series begins. The new epilogue focuses on Kyo and Tohru, and shows a scene from their day-to-day lives following the series' conclusion.
The movie opened in Japanese theaters on Feb. 18 and was also given a simultaneous release on Blu-ray and DVD in the region on the same day. Fans who see the movie in theaters, however, will be treated to a new 16-page manga chapter from series creator Natsuki Takaya. An international release for the movie, as well as the accompanying manga, have yet to be announced.
Fruits Basket tells the story of Tohru Honda, a cheerful girl who has been orphaned following the unexpected death of her mother. Tohru gets taken in by the secretive Sohma family, which includes the most popular boy at her school, the reserved and handsome Yuki, and the brash martial artist Kyo. Tohru then becomes one of the few outsiders to learn about the Sohma family's secret curse: when they feel weak or are embraced by a member of a different gender, they transform into one of the animals from the Chinese Zodiac.
The original manga debuted in 1998 and is now widely regarded alongside Naoko Takeuchi's Sailor Moon and Yoko Kamio's Hana Yori Dango (also known as Boys Over Flowers) as one of the best and most influential shojo manga ever made. Takaya's manga was first adapted into an anime in 2001 by Studio DEEN (Konosuba). While this anime series was popular in its time, it featured numerous changes and cuts from the original source material, which has caused Takaya to publicly state her disapproval of this version of the story. A rebooted anime series, this time handled by animation studio TMS (Lupin the Third), began airing in 2019. While this version still featured some differences from Takaya's original manga, the reboot earned a better reception from fans, professional critics, and the series creator herself. The series is now available for streaming on Crunchyroll, Funimation and Hulu, while the original manga is available in English from Yen Press.
