Forty clubbers have been injured after part of the floor in a Tenerife club collapsed, causing people to plunge into the basement.
Emergency services rushed to the Butterfly Disco Pub venue in Adeje at 2.30am on Sunday following reports that about four square metres of its floor had given way, the Canary Islands regional government said.
The club is located in a shopping centre in Playa de las Americas, a nightlife hotspot in the south of the Spanish island.
In a statement local government said: “After the floor collapsed, the people who were inside fell to the basement from the height of approximately one floor.”
Firefighters evacuated the club and the 22 were taken to hospital. Another 18 took themselves to hospital later.
Of the first 22, injuries included broken legs, ankle sprains and bruises. Two French nationals, a Belgian and a Romanian were among those hurt. Two of the 22 were seriously injured.
Police have launched an investigation into the incident.
