Fena's journey in Fena: Pirate Princess hasn't been an easy one. From losing her father and her memories, to almost being married off to a disgusting man, Fena's life has been a roller-coaster. To find out who she truly is, Fena and her friends try to piece together clues from her memories and set sail across the seven seas in search of Eden, the place her father told her to go to. Through it all, she has maintained an earnest and spunky disposition. Now that Fena has arrived at Eden, she will have to dig deep to find the courage for her to make a difficult decision.
CBR spoke to Asami Seto, Fena's voice actor, about how her impression of Fena has changed over time and how she approached voicing the character since Fena: Pirate Princess is an original work. The voice actress also broke down the pivotal decision that Fena made in Episode 2.
CBR: What was your first impression of Fena and how has your perception changed as the show progresses?
Asami Seto: When I first saw her character design, my impression was that she was a pale, delicate, beautiful young lady. But when she started moving as animation, her personality was so dynamic with such an ability to take action, and her expressions shifted so rapidly, my impression of her expanded to include the fact that she was also a girl who talked a lot.
Because Fena: Pirate Princess is an original work, there’s no source material to refer to: what kinds of things did you consider when voicing a character like Fena, who is still trying to figure out her identity?
I think that when you're involved in an original work, communication with the director is very important. I wanted to make certain that I knew where he wanted me to take the character that had been entrusted to me.
The moment that Fena cuts her hair is a powerful one. Can you describe what emotions you were experiencing at that time?
I think that what is depicted there is the change in her level of determination — her resolve before she cuts her hair and her resolve afterward. From the moment you see her, her long, white hair is striking and memorable. I think that the fact that she cuts it off means she is starting anew from that point.
What kind of emotions do you hope viewers will experience when watching Fena’s journey?
I think that everyone who watches will enjoy it in their own way, but there is an element of mystery that runs through the whole work, so really immersing yourself, almost as if you're adventuring with Fena and the others, might be one way to enjoy it.
