In the wake of Onyx Equinox's Dark Trailer, CBR can exclusively offer a glimpse at the terrifying power of the Aztec gods with a clip from the upcoming Crunchyroll anime series.
Titled "The Last Day," the clip shows what happens when Mictlāntēcutli, the Aztec god of the dead, makes its presence known in the human world. As it drags an entire city into the underworld, it leaves only terror and destruction in its wake.
The clip picks up as a monster stomps around the city. Suddenly, the city starts to crumble and break as horns erupt from the ground. Someone just outside the city watches in horror as screaming people tumble into the pit created by the collapsing city. Then, Mictlāntēcutli emerges from the ground, revealing its massive size, easily dwarfing both the buildings and the monster.
With a roar, Mictlāntēcutli grabs the monster, effortlessly ripping it in half and feasting on its blood. Then, with a mighty strike, it slams its hands to the ground, sending out a torrent of smoke and reducing the city to a crater as more bloodied bodies fall into the abyss.
In addition to this clip, CBR can exclusively reveal some stills from the episode. These stills give us a glimpse of the show's Aztec architecture as well as some of the monsters that populate this world.
Onyx Equinox is set in Mesoamerica and follows Izel, a human who -- due to a bet between the gods -- is picked as humanity's champion. It is their job to close all five gates to the underworld before humanity is destroyed.
According to the official synopsis of the first episode,
As Mictlāntēcutli initiates a blood war, the other Gods consider destroying humanity altogether. Quetzalcoatl and Tezcatlipoca make a side bet to see if the "lowest-of-the-low" can serve as humanity's champion to save the human race. In Uxm, a tragic decision sets Izel's destiny in motion.
Created by Sofia Alexander, Onyx Equinox stars Olivia Brown as Izel, Alejandro Vargas-Lugo as Yaotl, Carolina Ravassa as Zyanya, Kimberly Woods as Xanastaku, Patrick Pedraza as Yun and Juan Arturo Maldonado as K'in. The series premieres Saturday, Nov. 21 on Crunchyroll.
