Released back in Winter 2016, Erased was a critical success and has been hailed by some as an instant anime classic. Winning awards and obtaining high ratings was not the height of the series' popularity, however, as it went on to have a live-action television drama and a live-action film adaptation. Despite its accolades, Erased has flown under the radar of some anime fans in the West.
This is a shame because Erased was not only one of the best anime series of 2016, but will become a bonafide classic in the future. Very few stories have ever blended mystery, sci-fi, and slice-of-life drama with such emotional gusto. So, where can a newcomer to the series begin? Here is a handy guide on where to read the manga, and how to stream the anime and live-action adaptations.
The Plot of Erased
The story of Erased focuses on protagonist Satoru Fujinuma, a young man who has the ability to jump through time moments before any life-threatening event. This power is known as "Revival," and he can stop bad things from happening in the past by utilizing it.
When an unknown criminal murders Satoru's mother Sachiko, he uses his ability to go back in time 18 years and is given the opportunity to save her -- and the lives of three of his childhood friends who were involved in a mysterious kidnapping incident.
Where to Read the Erased Manga
Originally penned by Kei Sanbe, all eight volumes of Erased are available for purchase through Yen Press or on Amazon in a digital format. Each volume goes for $6.99, and this also includes the single-volume side story manga, Erased: Re, which focuses on the lives of Satoru's friends and provides a different perspective from the main story. For those who prefer physical media, Erased comprises five hardcover volumes which can all be found on Amazon or RightStufAnime.
Unfortunately the light novel of Erased, titled Boku Dake ga Inai Machi: Another Record, has not yet been published in English, so only those who can read Japanese will be able to enjoy it on the Western shores.
Where to Watch the Erased Anime
All 12 episodes of the Erased anime can be enjoyed on Netflix in either its original Japanese language format or English dubbed. For those without Netflix, the series can be found on Crunchyroll and Hulu as well. The 12 episodes that make up 2017's live-action adaptation are also on Netflix in both subbed and dubbed format. Unfortunately, the 2016 live-action film of Erased is not available on any streaming platforms and cannot be rented.
Erased is one of those anime that stays with viewers long after it's done. It will enthrall newcomers and anime veterans alike, featuring beautiful animation, a gripping story filled with intrigue and suspense, and a surprising sense of humor. Take a jump through time with Satoru's adventures and enjoy this fantastic story.
