Basically, an electronic dance music duo essentially refers to two people that come together in a partnership, usually producing one of the harder forms of electronic dance music available today. The collaboration occurs via online interaction via sites like Facebook, MySpace, or another such site. Two people may decide to start their own electronic dance music duo and begin releasing original music on CD or via digital download from various websites. This is usually called a ghost production or a ghostwriting arrangement. There are also websites where a collaboration occurs, but there are no financial investment involved and all of the production work can be self-produced by the collaborating partner.
EDM is an acronym for electronic dance music duo. It is an acronym that has become widely used and is a shortened version of electro dj music, which refers to the musical style of producers and DJs from countries such as the United Kingdom, Ireland, Italy, France, Belgium, Spain, and the United States. As this style of electronic dance music duo has become more popular, new versions of the traditional style of DJing have begun to appear.
As an example of an artist that may create and produce his or her own electronic dance music duo, Martin Garrix and Andy Cribbins are both active members of Kodee. They first began working together in 1995, when they were both in school in Reading, England. Although neither of them was formally trained as musicians, Garrix was interested in electronics and audio engineering while Cribbins had a passion for percussion and older style music styles. Together, they began jamming and eventually began recording their first album ‘A Little More Light’.
Shortly thereafter, Garrix began working with photographer Alex Wackerman and he would go on to produce Garrix & Bangalter’s second album ‘Reinventing Your Exit’ on which he also performed. After several years, the duo decided to leave their native Reading and travel around the world to find new musical ideas. They ultimately settled in Los Angeles where they recorded ‘Bangalter’, the most successful single from their long-running career. During the making of this album, they hired numerous producers including Swankworthy, Todd Edwards, RZA, and Dr Dre. All of these men helped make ‘Bangalter’ a hit and made the album one of the biggest selling singles of all time. A few months later, the single “Concentration” was released and saw heavy rotation on various radio stations worldwide.
The single “I’m Wide” from the band’s third album ‘The Dynasty: Roc La Familia’ was another hit. This track was also produced by numerous other artists such as Kanye West, Rihanna, and Paul McCartney. The beats featured on the track were produced by producers who were relatively unknown at the time. Two months after its release, ‘Reinventing Yourself’ was released featuring guest spots from Kanye West and Rihanna. Unlike the previous songs by the band, ‘I’m Wide’ saw both artists collaborating with numerous producers including Converse, Rihanna, and West. This collaboration marked the first time that two major pop stars would collaborate with artists outside of their own genres.
After a successful string of singles albums, ‘The Dynasty: Roc La Familia’ was set to be the end of Electronic dance music duo Kevine and Don Casciato’s careers. However, a few months later, the pair released an EP titled ‘Tear It Up’, featuring guest spots from Jay Z and Beyonce. This EP was met with critical acclaim and topped the charts in Australia and United Kingdom. In the weeks following the release, the duo signed to Virgin/EMM and released a second studio album named ‘Election’.
In recent years, Kevine and Don have released several other studio albums including ‘Xxplosive’, ‘Reckless’, and ‘All Time’. While some of their releases have been well received by critics, many critics have criticized their lack of attention to detail and overall amateur production style. Despite this, the duo still managed to sell several hundred copies of their self titled debut album. During the last few years, they have also collaborated with several well known rap and hip hop producers including No I.D., Pharrell, and Pusha T. With the success of ‘The Dynasty: Roc La Familia’, it is expected that Electronic dance music duo Kevine and Don will garner even greater attention in the near future.
