Studio Ghibli and GKIDS have unveiled the first English-language trailer for the upcoming animated movie Earwig and the Witch, including the film's theme song by Grammy Award winner Kacey Musgraves.
The trailer also revealed that Musgraves will also be voicing Earwig's mother, who was a lead singer in a rock band.
The trailer showcases a young orphan named Earwig, who is adopted by a witch. She soon finds a collection of old vinyl records of a rock band fronted by her mother, which Earwig listens to as she acclimates to her new, magical home.
Helmed by Studio Ghibli co-founder Hayao Miyazaki's son Goro Miyazaki, the film adapts the fantasy novel of the same name, by Diana Wynne Jones. Jones also wrote the 1986 novel which inspired Studio Ghibli's Howl's Moving Castle.
GKIDS will handle the North American distribution of the film after previously undertaking the North American distribution of Lupin III: The First earlier this year. The movie will air on NHK in Japan after its premiere was delayed earlier this year due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
Directed by Goro Miyazaki, Earwig and the Witch will premiere on Dec. 30 in Japan, with a North American release planned for early 2021.
