A new fan animation pits Dragon Ball's martial artists against the Marvel Cinematic Universe's superheroes.
The video, which was posted on Twitter, sees Spider-Man and Captain America take on Piccolo, Master Roshi and Vegeta in his Super Saiyan form; Piccolo and Master Roshi dominate their fights by punching and suplexing their respective opponents. However, the impressive animation ends with Steve Rogers kicking Vegeta in the face before body-slamming him.
The short video comes from Kenta Shinohara, the stop-motion animator behind the popular Animist YouTube channel. Shinohara is known for creating amazingly well-animated and often humorous shorts using action figures and has covered everything from Naruto to The Legend of Zelda.
The Dragon Ball multimedia franchise kicked off in 1984 with the serialization of Akira Toriyama's manga of the same name in Shueisha's Weekly Shōnen Jump. Following protagonist Son Goku from childhood through adulthood as he trains in martial arts and battles increasingly bizarre villains, the story produced 519 individual chapters and was adapted into two anime series by Toei Animation; Dragon Ball, which originally aired from 1986 to 1989, and Dragon Ball Z, which initially ran from 1989 to 1996.
Dragon Ball and the MCU remain cornerstones of the pop-cultural landscape with new entries for both franchises on the way. Most notably, Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero is set to be released in Japan in IMAX, 4DX and Dolby Cinema theaters on June 11 and internationally sometime later this summer. The movie will focus predominantly on the master-student relationship between Piccolo and Gohan and see the return of the antagonistic Red Ribbon Army.
Thor: Love and Thunder, the next feature film in the MCU, will hit theaters on July 8. According to director Taika Waititi, it is "sort of like a midlife crisis film, really" and will see Chris Hemsworth's titular god trying to find inner peace. Alongside Hemsworth, Tessa Thompson and Natalie Portman are returning as Valkyrie and Jane Foster respectively, and Christian Bale joins the MCU as Gorr the God Butcher. The lastest MCU TV series, Ms. Marvel, also recently made its debut on the Disney+ streaming service.
Many entries in the MCU are available to stream on Disney+, and several of the Dragon Ball anime series can be found on Crunchyroll.
