WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Dragon Ball Super Chapter #67, by Akira Toriyama, Toyotarou, Caleb Cook and Brandon Bovia, available now in English from Viz Media.
As Universe 7's God of Destruction, Beerus isn't a character who takes humiliation lightly. The immensely powerful being has proven over and over again that he's capable of leveling worlds over petty grudges. Beerus' disposition nearly resulted in the annihilation of Earth early in Dragon Ball Super, but in the end, the God of Destruction instead opted to train Goku and Vegeta, thus making them more powerful. However, as the result of a humiliation Beerus suffers at the hands of the Grand Priest in Dragon Ball Super Chapter #67, Goku might once again find himself at odds with one of Universe 7's most powerful deities.
Earlier in Dragon Ball Super, Merus -- who was an Angel masquerading as a Galactic Patrol member -- interfered directly in the fight against Moro, which resulted in him being eradicated. However, that death wasn't quite as permanent as it seemed, with Dragon Ball Super Chapter #67 revealing the Grand Priest didn't punish Merus to the full extent of his abilities.
In Chapter #67, Whis and Beerus attempt to avoid taking responsibility for Merus' interference, which results in the Grand Priest explaining that he opted to bring Merus back as a mortal, though stripped of his divine powers. This comes as a shock to Beerus and Whis, as the Grand Priest was staunchly against Angels using their abilities to interfere in such matters.
The Grand Priest soon reveals Kaio-Shin volunteered to sacrifice his life to keep Merus from being eradicated entirely. This angers Beerus, as the lives of the two beings are inextricably tied, and if one dies so does the other. While the Grand Priest does not decide to kill Kaio-Shin and Beerus, he does "impose a penalty" on all three rulebreakers.
As Dragon Ball Super Chapter #67 reveals, this punishment is that Kaio-Shin and Beerus are used as racehorses by Lord Zeno and his counterpart from the future. Whis times the two racers, with Beerus proving faster than Kaio-Shin. Still, Lord Zeno berates Beerus for not going fast enough, telling him he "hafta gallop faster!" As the two Lord Zenos prepare to go another round, Beerus blames Goku, saying, "Merus only broke the dumb law cuz of him!" Whis then informs Beerus that Goku and Merus are partying and celebrating the latter's resurrection, further angering the God of Destruction.
As a result of his recent transformation, Goku has reached new heights of power unseen in the Dragon Ball franchise so far. This means that, in future chapters of Dragon Ball Super, Goku might just find himself once again fighting Beerus -- though certainly not over the fate of Earth. And once the two fight again, Beerus might just find that he's finally met his match.
Dragon Ball Super Chapter #68 releases Jan. 20
