Roughly translated, the tweet reads, "The latest financial report from Toei Animation CONFIRMS that the Dragon Ball Super 2022 Movie would arrive between July and December of next year. (WINTER SEASON possibly)."
The new Dragon Ball Super movie is believed to be a continuation of Dragon Ball Super: Broly, which released in theaters in 2018. Dragon Ball creator Akira Toriyama has once again been tapped to produce the story. Toei has yet to reveal the film's official title, logo or key art. Development of the new film began in 2018 immediately after Dragon Ball Super: Broly's release, with the team attempting to tell a "large-scale story" that would continue to build the world of the theatrical Dragon Ball films. The film promises to enter "unexplored territory in terms of the visual aesthetics" according to Toriyama.
"The new release will be the second film based on Dragon Ball Super, the manga title and the anime series which launched in 2015. The first such movie was the 2018 release Dragon Ball Super: Broly which was a smash hit with audiences -- setting a worldwide box office record of over $120 million," Toei said in its official Dragon Ball Super movie announcement.
The Dragon Ball Super manga was written by Toriyama and illustrated by Toyotarou and premiered in June 2015 as an official sequel to the original Dragon Ball storyline, which ran from 1984 to 1995. The anime adaptation of Dragon Ball Super debuted one month after the manga, running for 131 episodes from July 2015 to March 2018. Toonami's English dub aired in the United States from January 2017 to October 2019.
Dragon Ball Super: Broly was the first film under the Dragon Ball Super film label. The twentieth feature film in the larger Dragon Ball franchise, Broly was notable for being the third movie overall to include Toriyama's direct involvement. The film's announcement was accidentally leaked ahead of Goku Day this year.
The next entry to the Dragon Ball Super film series does not currently have an official title. The film is set to release in 2022.
