WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Episode 35 of Digimon Adventure: (2020), "The Glowing Angewomon," now streaming on Crunchyroll.
Digimon Adventure: (2020) has had a lot of surprises in store for viewers as of late -- from Pegasusmon showing up a season earlier than its original series counterpart to Darkknightmon's true identity. But perhaps most surprising is the lack of any new Mega form Digimon since Taichi and Agumon unlocked WarGreymon all the way back in Episode 30.
So, it's with great joy that fans have noticed hints in the Episode 36 preview that AtlurKabuterimon is close to reaching Mega Level... If only the Digimon Encyclopedia segment hadn't shown an alternate Mega for Agumon first.
Once again, main-character Taichi and Agumon are stealing the spotlight from the rest of the cast with the teased appearance of BlitzGreymon. While his part in the story of Digimon Adventure: (2020) is as-of-yet-unknown is certain to be the source of fan theories, discussions and art, poor Tentomon's Mega form may have the utter misfortune of being introduced in the same episode.
The preview reveals that Koshiro and Kabuterimon manage to meet back up with the Taichi and end up in a battle against MetallifeKuwagamon, with both Agumon and Tentomon digivolving to MetalGreymon and AtlurKabuterimon, respectively. From this setup, it's easy to see one or both digivolving to Mega level and taking down the seemingly powerful Digimon.
It makes sense for this version of the series that Koshiro, as the original deuteragonist of the reboot, and Tentomon would be the next pair to reach Mega level. While it's not as explicitly shown as BlitzGreymon, during the preview, AtlurKabuterimon's horn begins to glow gold, hinting at his next form, HerculesKabuterimon. Originally debuting during Digimon Adventure Tri, HerculesKabuterimon is a powerful-looking insect-like Digimon that would be perfect to pit up against MetallifeKuwagamon -- however, it's also easy to see how the appearance of BlitzGreymon could easily upstage this crucial development.
Not only would this be another branching evolution like we saw with Pegasusmon, but a new never-before-seen-animated form could easily steal the viewer's attention away from the golden beetle and Koshiro. Likewise, given that HerculesKabuterimon is technically old news, it would make sense that the episode's plot would once again revolve around Taichi and Agumon to justify the new form.
While in-universe, there's no doubt that the new form(s) would be exciting for everyone, we can't help but feel a little sorry for the rest of the Digidestined. From Takeru and Patamon, who technically haven't even reached Ultimate level yet, to Sora who's been with Tai every time he's called on WarGreymon without even a hint of Piyomon's mega, Hououmon, appearing. And now, Koshiro and Tentomon, who may actually be about to get their Mega form... only to maybe have that development ignored in favor of the shiny new BlitzGreymon.
