Details About America Chavez’s Scrapped Spider-Man: No Way Home Role Surface

New details on America Chavez's scrapped role in 2021's Spider-Man: No Way Home have surfaced.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Chavez (Xochitll Gomez) will appear in the MCU again at some point following the release of Doctor Strange in Multiverse of Madness, though just when isn't clear. After that detail was a note that Marvel Studios originally considered having Chavez appear in No Way Home, a fact confirmed by concept art of her in the film earlier this year. The outlet then noted, had Chavez appeared in No Way Home, she would have essentially played a "sorcerer's apprentice type role." However, as Chavez did not debut in No Way Home, Ned Leeds (Jacob Batalon), instead served in that capacity.

No Way Home saw Peter Parker/Spider-Man (Tom Holland) enlisting the help of Doctor Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) to hide his identity after it was exposed to the world by Quentin Beck/Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal) at the end of 2018's Spider-Man: Far From Home. However, the spell went awry and brought in characters from across the Marvel multiverse. In the movie, Ned discovered he had the ability to use magic.

Set following the events of No Way Home, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness sees the titular hero fighting both against and alongside multiversal variants of heroes and villains to stop a great evil. Along the way, Strange will team up with Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) and Chavez.

Created by Joe Casey and Nick Dragotta, Chavez first appeared in 2011's Vengeance #1. In addition to a number of standard superhero powers such as enhanced strength and durability, Chavez can travel between dimensions using star-shaped portals. Thanks to her powers, Chavez has been a key member fo such teams as the Young Avengers and Ultimates.

Recently, Casey revealed he has not received any payment for the use of Chavez in Multiverse of Madness. According to the writer, Marvel offered him some money ahead of the film's premiere, but he rejected it, describing the sum as a "pittance." Casey then admitted that, while Marvel does own Chavez, there are systemic problems in the way "creators are neither respected nor rewarded" for their work.

Spider-Man: No Way Home is available now on home media. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness hits theaters on May 6.
