Deadpool writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick discuss the reason for the upcoming threequel's extended production time.
In an interview with The Playlist, the pair were asked why Deadpool 3 was taking so long to reach theaters. For reference, the last entry in the franchise, Deadpool 2, was released in 2018. "We want to make it great," Reese said. "We're in the laboratory working on it with Ryan Reynolds all the time, and we're very much entertaining ourselves."
He continued, "So, hopefully, that translates and ultimately will entertain the world. But you know, it's a marriage between Fox and Disney and it's two different universes and it's not easy. But it's also a wonderful challenge and, you know, high-class problems to be able to merge those, those worlds. So, we're, we're enjoying it."
Reese also commented on the inherent issues with trying to merge the Deadpool films into the space shared between Fox and Marvel Studios. "Obviously, it's like, it's two completely different regimes, right? So, it's two different bureaucracies," he said. "It was Fox, all these different people, and now it's not those people anymore. It's these [Disney] people and these people do things their way. And we were used to doing things our way, so there are differences, but I think the great part is that Marvel's been incredibly supportive."
Wade Wilson, aka. Deadpool, made his Marvel Comics debut in 1990's New Mutants #98 by Rob Liefeld and Fabien Nicieza. A product of Weapon X, Deadpool's healing factor and impeccable mercenary skills made him as lethal as any other top-tier assassin, while his fourth-wall-breaking antics helped him secure a special place in the annals of pop culture. A heavily altered, much-maligned version of the character was portrayed by Ryan Reynolds in 2009's X-Men Origins: Wolverine. However, Reynolds would go on to play a more comics-accurate version of the Merc with a Mouth in 2016's Deadpool and its sequel, Deadpool 2, in 2018.
Now that Deadpool is part of Marvel Studios, which is owned by Disney, there was some concern from fans that Deadpool 3 would not have the same raunchy tone as the previous two films. However, Wernick has assured fans that "Deadpool is gonna be Deadpool." In February 2021, Marvel Studios President and Chief Creative Officer Kevin Feige confirmed that Deadpool 3 would maintain the R-rating established by the previous films, which were distributed by 20th Century Studios. However, Marvel Studios has no plans to release any R-rated movies beyond Deadpool 3.
Deadpool 3 currently has no release date.
