Brie Larson shared a throwback photo of her first meeting with Ms. Marvel's Iman Vellani.
"From our first Zoom, I knew she'd be the best Marvel," Larson wrote on Twitter. Vellani will co-star in The Marvels with the Captain Marvel actor when it releases in theaters on July 28, 2023. The movie will see Larson's Carol Danvers / Captain Marvel and Vellani's Kamala Khan / Ms. Marvel team-up with Teyonah Parris' older version of Monica Rambeau and Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury against Zawe Ashton's mysterious villain. Park Seo-joon will also star in an undisclosed role, while Colin Stoneley will portray Papp-Tonn, a Kree scientist whose comic book counterpart has ties to the Silver Surfer.
Plot details for the film remain under wraps, but the Captain Marvel sequel will bring together various plot strands from the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Captain Marvel was last seen in the mid-credits scene of Shang-Chi and the Legends of the Ten Rings, while Fury is currently based on a Skrull spaceship. Parris' Rambeau made her debut in WandaVision as an agent of S.W.O.R.D. and received powers toward the end of the series. A mid-credits scene also implied that she would be traveling to space to meet with Fury, who will be the focus of his own Secret Invasion TV series on Disney+. Meanwhile, Vellani's Ms. Marvel is currently starring in her own TV series on Disney+, which explores the origins of her character and admiration for Captain Marvel.
Vellani is not the only Ms. Marvel star set to return for The Marvels. Saagar Shaikh, Zenobia Shroff and Mohan Kapur will reprise their roles as Kamala's older brother Aamir, mother Muneeba and father Yusuf in the film. Brie Larson, in turn, is rumored to have a cameo in the Disney+ series.
Despite all these new heroes joining Larson in The Marvels, the actor has no plans to leave the MCU. "The novelty is not even close to wearing off. It's the thrill of a lifetime. It's the greatest honor and beyond my wildest expectations that I could help provide this symbol for people," she said. "Three years have just been the beginning for me of getting to see what the importance of having characters like this can do for people. It can bring strength, it can bring confidence, it can bring community, and so we're just getting started and I'm really excited for people to see what's next."
