Better Call Saul co-creator Peter Gould just confirmed two very high-profile guest stars for the Breaking Bad spinoff's final season.
Gould confirmed that Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul have signed on to reprise their roles of Walter White and Jesse Pinkman, respectively, during a PaleyFest LA panel moderated by Variety television editor Michael Schneider. "I don’t want to spoil things for the audience, but I will say the first question we had when we started the show was, 'Are we gonna see Walt and Jesse on the show?' Instead of evading, I’ll just say yeah," Gould said. How or the circumstances or anything, you'll just have to discover that for yourself, but I have to say that's one of many things that I think you'll discover this season."
Ahead of the panel, Vince Gilligan, who co-created both Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, had already teased the return of Walter and Jesse in a recent interview. "It would be a damn shame if the show ended without [Cranston and Paul] appearing, would it not? You heard it here first," Gilligan said at the time.
Several major supporting characters from Breaking Bad have starred in the spinoff since it first aired on AMC in February 2015. Aside from Jimmy McGill/Saul Goodman (Bob Odenkirk) himself, the prequel series has featured crossover appearances from the likes of Mike Ehrmantraut, Gustavo Fring, Hank Schrader, Steven Gomez, Tuco and Hector Salamanca, Krazy-8, Gale Boetticher and Francesca Liddy.
A new trailer for Better Caul Saul Season 6 dropped in March 2022 and hinted at several dramatic developments designed to close the narrative gap between the spinoff and its predecessor. This includes Jimmy completing his transformation into the Saul Goodman persona he employs in Breaking Bad, and Gus' ongoing efforts to build his burgeoning drug empire with the help of his faithful fixer, Mike.
The show's final season hasn't been without its share of off-screen drama either. Star Bob Odenkirk suffered a heart attack in July 2021 while filming Better Call Saul Season 6, an experience he recently opened up about in February. "We were shooting a scene, we'd been shooting all day, and luckily I didn't go back to my trailer," Odenkirk recalled, discussing a break between filming. "I went to play the Cubs game and ride my workout bike, and I just went down. Rhea [Seehorn] said I started turning bluish-gray right away." Fortunately, Odenkirk recovered from the ordeal, and he returned to the set in September 2021 to film his remaining scenes.
Better Call Saul Season 6 premieres April 18 on AMC.
