Boruto: Sarada Just Found Her Perfect Mentor In a Brutal Showdown

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Boruto: Naruto Next Generations Episode 171, "The Results of Training," now streaming on Crunchyroll.

In the Boruto anime, Sarada has become slightly depressed following the beatdown she and Team 7 received from Deepa. She's now trying to improve her Sharingan as she feels inadequate after that brawl, which has been made worse by Mitsuki being left in intensive care due to his injuries. Unfortunately, it's also created a domestic dispute within the Uchiha household as she runs into conflict with her mom, Sakura.

Sakura is worried about the girl pushing herself, even voicing concerns to Sasuke about her training. However, in Episode 171, things turn around for Sarada when she gets the perfect mentor -- one who understands her vulnerability and shortcomings better than anyone else, and this helps her to level-up.

This is, surprisingly, Sakura herself, who shows up to a session and takes over from Sasuke. Sarada believes her mom thinks she's weak, but Sakura says she doesn't know if Sarada has the same resolve she had to be a shinobi in war. Sakura doesn't want her being reactive to defeats on a case-by-case basis, indicating that Sarada needs to see this as a lifelong commitment. This leads to them sparring.

Sarada is thoroughly impressed, if not scared, as she witnesses the intimidating power her mom holds in her punches first-hand. Some may remember Sakura as an expert medical ninja under Tsunade due to her high chakra levels and manipulation, but her strength is off the charts -- which is what always had Kakashi scared about her cutting loose.

As they scrap, Sakura's punches just miss the girl, who knows they could be deadly judging by how much they damage the landscape around them. Not even her Sharingan can help her out, despite it being slightly better, but the challenge is one she accepts as she starts fighting back in the forest, realizing her mom's pushing her not to hold back.

Through the wisdom being dispensed, she realizes her mom's a problem-solver: this is one way of showing the girl love as Sakura wants to protect her by making her a better ninja. Thus, the trust is back in their relationship and Sarada decides to copy Sakura's movements, increasing her chakra flow in the same way. It's a bit of a shortcut as her Sharingan should be used for this but it works. Both throw massive punches that cancel each other out due to the sheer force and willpower behind them, creating a crater in the terrain.

In fact, the whole of Konoha sees and feels this explosion, and while Sakura advises her it's dangerous to rely on your opponent like this, she likes how Sarada adapts, evolves and overcomes. Sasuke admits it's just a start, but notes this improvisation is risky, which Kakashi woulda attest to when he was a "copy ninja" with the eye he got from Obito.

Still, they love how Sarada thought outside the box and Sasuke realizes Sakura's methods will bear results faster. His wife had her insecurities about being weak, but seeing as she helped beat Kaguya up in the past, he knows she's the ideal person for Sarada to emulate. As they have such similar traits, it seems Sasuke will take a backseat for now as the entire Uchiha family works together to upgrade Sarada.
