WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Season 1 of Blue Period, now streaming on Netflix.
One of the most intriguing aspects of Blue Period Season 1 was how Yatora Yaguchi struggled as a novice artist, only to persevere and surpass talented peers and gain acceptance into Tokyo University of the Arts. It was a huge weight off his back, proving to his parents and teachers he had what it took to make it in the art field.
Yaguchi was determined to make money as well, silencing doubters who felt this career wouldn't pay dividends. However, as he prepped for his next big step out of high school, some unanswered questions were left hanging by the end of Blue Period's debut season.
Could Blue Period Develop Romance Between Yaguchi and Ryuji?
There was clear attraction between Yaguchi and Ryuji, with the protagonist not caring how Ryuji was a cross-dresser. He didn't want to attach labels to Ryuji nor his own sexuality, deeming them as fluid and as abstract as art. Ryuji, unfortunately, tanked exams and indicated she wanted out of Japanese Art, which has left Blue Period fans wondering her next steps.
Her family, bar her grandmother, disapproves of her lifestyle after being born a boy, so it remains to be seen if she can get over the drama home and if she and Yaguchi will become an item. Coupling up may even get her to return to art like her grandmother would like, but if Ryuji goes astray, she could get depressed again and fall in with the wrong crowd.
What Will Happen With Yaguchi and Mori?
Maru Mori is the senior who inspired Yaguchi to pursue art, all before she left to attend Musahino Art University, where she continued to study religious art. They had feelings for each other, with Yaguchi drawing her something before she left, and Mori eventually returning to see his nude painting that got him into Tokyo.
She was fawning over it, with their former teacher, Saeki, clearly prodding her to go after him and strike something up. Whether they can do so and balance promising art careers is a likely Season 2 storyline for Blue Period.
How Will Yaguchi's Peers Handle Tokyo and College?
Fumi Kamiyama is the eccentric silver-haired protege of Saeki who got into Tokyo too, and thankfully, she doesn't seem to have much in the way of personal issues. However, her exuberance could get the best of her if she goes in naive. Blue Period fans are eager to see how she'll handle Tokyo -- as well as the third student who got in, Yotasuke Takahashi. He had major family drama and confidence issues, leaving fans wondering what happened that scarred him. He doesn't trust anyone, even a kind Yaguchi, so he might not cope well in university.
What's The Plan For Those Who Failed Their Exams?
Maki failed the exam and was crying at a concert, leaving her sister -- an expert artist -- to console her and reveal she'll wait on her. However, many others seem disenchanted with the field, which left fans wondering what the likes of Sakuraba would do next.
She suggested she'd get a job and forget about the dream, but some of Oba's other students at cram school are still interested. It begs the question: will they seek out Yaguchi and the other graduates for help? This could help them all advance together. Hashida, especially, would like another crack as he has an ego and knows he's as good as the graduates.
Will Koi Achieve His Dream of Becoming a Baker?
Yaguchi's original crew outside the art field are scared about moving on, iffy on whether they'll be successful. He encouraged them to believe in themselves, leaving Blue Period viewers curious if they'll take the lead from how dedicated he was to his craft.
Most of all, Koi was inspired so much that he pursued his dream of being a baker. Seeing as he was given a lot of screen time in Season 1, fans would like to know if he has the discipline to open his bakery -- and if the guys will be genuinely good and supportive taste-tasters.
All 12 episodes of Season 1 of Blue Period are available on Netflix.
