The following article contains spoilers for Digimon Ghost Game through episode 27 "Monster's Beauty Serum," streaming now on Crunchyroll.
While Digimon Ghost Game has been a more episodic series than previous entries in the franchise, there is an overarching mystery surrounding the appearance of Digimon in the real world. So far, it appears that the disappearance of Hiro Amanokawa’s father Hokuto into the Digital World may be connected to this intersection of worlds. While the team has been slowly finding more information, one central figure may have their answers.
BlackTailmon Uver. has made sporadic appearances throughout the series and has serving as a courier. While this role initially entailed delivering messages and inventions from Hokuto to Hiro, BlackTailmon Uver. has created portals to ferry Digimon between pocket Digital Worlds back to the Digital World. Examining BlackTailmon's roles as courier and ferryman may hold clues to the series' greater mysteries and imply just how connected they are to all the realms.
BlackTailmon Uver.'s Courier Career Connects Hiro Amanokawa with His Father
Throughout the series, BlackTailmon Uver. has served as a silent courier, delivering messages from Hokuto to Hiro. In the series premiere, "The Sewn-Lip Man", BlackTailmon Uver delivered three DIM cards to Hiro that Hiro quickly realized connected with the Vital bracelets, or digivices, that his father left behind when he disappeared.
These DIM cards served multiple purposes. First, they allowed Hiro, Ruli Tsukiyono, and Kiyoshiro Higashimitarai to connect with their Digimon partners and change their visibility to the rest of the world as needed. Second, once connected with a digivice, these cards enable each child to help their Digimon partner evolve into more powerful forms. Third, they helped the team transport themselves and any Digimon they faced into a pocket dimension that served as a liminal space between the real world and the Digital World.
BlackTailmon Uver. also delivered a message from Hokuto to Hiro briefly explaining the Digital World and asking Hiro to treat Gammamon like his little brother. Hokuto's message in conjunction with the delivery of the DIM cards and Gammamon to Hiro implied that Hokuto was the inventor of both the digivices and the DIM cards.
This connection was further expanded when BlackTailmon Uver. delivered more DIM cards to the team to expand the environments that they could transport themselves to in Episode 14, "Zashiki-Warashi". BlackTailmon Uver. also delivered another message from Hokuto alongside the DIM cards. However, in this message, Hokuto was completely blazé about the danger he faced or the alternate uses for the DIM cards that he sent. Instead, he seemed to intend to use them as digital postcards for his son to help him engage with the wonders that Hokuto was seeing on his journey.
In Episode 27, "Monster's Beauty Serum", Hiro finally figured out that he could also employ BlackTailmon Uver.'s sources. He wrote a letter for his father on the chance that BlackTailmon Uver. would return, and they seemingly accepted the job. This moment both showed Hiro's cleverness and cemented the fact that BlackTailmon Uver served as Hiro's main connection to his missing father, a possible means for Hiro to finally find his father and bring him home.
BlackTailmon Uver. Also Serves as a Digimon Ferryman between Worlds
Throughout Digimon Ghost Game, most Digimon have made it clear that they accidentally transported to the real world through a portal, and they have no way of getting home on their own. BlackTailmon Uver. seemed to be one exception to this rule.
In Episode 8 "The Nightly Procession of Monsters", both Metal Fantomon and Sistermon Ciel were forcing other Digimon to take place in a nightly race where Metal Fantomon killed anyone who fell behind. After it was abundantly clear that neither Metal Fantomon nor Sistermon Ciel had any plans to stop, BlackTailmon Uver. intervened, using a rice cooker to create a portal between the pocket Digital dimension and the real world to bring both Digimon back to the Digital world. Thus, BlackTailmon Uver. revealed their other role as ferryman between worlds.
BlackTailmon Uver. intervened on other occasions to transport Digimon back to the Digital World. In Episode 20, "Prison of Fire", Darklizamon and Saberdramon seemed to be seeking destruction, and they even seemed to be responsible for a man's death.
However, Darklizamon and Saberdramon later revealed that their actions were desparate attempts to gain the team's attention so that they could be returned to the Digital World. BlackTailmon Uver. then appeared and created a new portal using the technology on hand. Thus, while the rice cooker might have been another invention of Hokuto, BlackTailmon Uver. might have their own technological expertise to help them with their courier and ferryman duties.
Notably, BlackTailmon Uver. has only transported Digimon who were in the pocket dimension, not in the real world, with one exception. After Bokomon's death in Episode 13, "Executioner", BlackTailmon Uver. collected Bokomon's digitama, presumably to return him safely to the Digital world where he could be born again in peace.
At the time, they seemed to be in the real world. This more somber duty further expanded upon BlackTailmon Uver.'s role as ferryman that connected them with mythological figures that escort people to the afterlife after they die, and this moment also showed that BlackTailmon Uver.'s portals might connect in all the realms.
Therefore, BlackTailmon Uver.'s role as courier and ferryman makes them one of the most powerful figures in Digimon Ghost Game. While their purpose seemed to connect Hiro with his father, their expanded role as ferryman makes them the one character that bridges the worlds on a regular basis. As the team continues to investigate the series' mysteries, BlackTailmon Uver.'s abilities place them at the center of the action and show that they could hold the answers that the team needs.
