Black Clover: Can Grey Transform Into a Fearless Black Bull?

WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Black Clover Episode 150, available now on Crunchyroll.

Although Grey has been in the Black Bulls from the beginning of Black Clover, she's avoided the spotlight due to a lack of confidence and excessive shyness. Fortunately, she makes a ton of progress in Episode 150; enough that she might just have enough confidence to face the challenges waiting for her in the Spade Kingdom.

Grey’s abilities allow her to take on anyone's physical appearance and replicate their magical abilities. Despite having such versatile magic, she is an incredibly shy person who's completely terrified of other people’s attention. With the big battle against those in the Spade Kingdom on the horizon, she surprisingly asks Noelle to help her by training her to build confidence in herself.

Black Clover Noelle Glasses

Grey seemingly admires Noelle’s noble confidence, which she wants to establish in herself. Noelle and Gordon proceed to help her in some role-playing exercises, first as Noelle, then taking it down to an easier notch as Asta. While this had some positive effects, it didn’t seem to have much of a permanent effect on her confidence levels.

She then asks Gauche for his help. The two have previously tag-teamed in battles, and she can double his magical range. Gauche surrounds her in a dome of his mirrors, which almost fails until Grey becomes hypnotized by the reflections of a butterfly that found itself in the enclosure of mirrors. Seeing his chance, Gauche uses that opportunity to change her mindset to be that of a confident turtle. Somehow, this actually works and she is finally able to walk around town without feeling self-conscious.

Grey’s lack of confidence may stem from the amount of time she's spent in other people’s forms. Can one establish their own identity confidently if they're walking in other people's shoes all of the time? Despite this potential lack of identity worsening her shyness, her time with the Black Bulls may have built a foundation for her to build both her identity and her confidence.

This chain of events is a testament to the progress she's made. Considering she used to spend most of her time in another form, it is difficult to imagine Grey asking for Noelle’s help for this type of training back at the beginning of the series. Deciding she wants to fight as herself and asking for help is a huge sign of progress, and her desire to do her best is a clear sign of growth.

Grey’s willingness to ask Gauche for help is also reflective of her trust in him. They have fought many battles together, and their potential for teamwork could even parallel the strength of the Asta-Finral-Vanessa trio. While exactly what happened with the butterfly was a little unclear, it is clear enough that it was a successful vehicle to help Grey overcome one of her biggest fears, and finally show some self-confidence.

While Grey still has a long way to go until she is as confident as Noelle, or as loud as Asta...or as arrogant as Gauche...her motivation to try her hardest has made for significant progress. She might never become fearless, but she's developing courage. With the support of the Black Bulls and continuous training, she may see a huge jump in character development during the upcoming battle with the Spade Kingdom.
