New Black Adam promotional art indicates that the DC Extended Universe blockbuster's titular antihero will engage in a massive battle with Hawkman.
The previously unseen promo artwork recently surfaced on Twitter. It depicts Dwayne Johnson's Black Adam locked in aerial combat with Aldis Hodge's Hawkman, as lightning crackles around them. It's unclear whether this particular showdown will also force Black Adam to contend with his winged adversary's Justice Society of America teammates, Atom Smasher (Noah Centineo), Cyclone (Quintessa Swindell) and Doctor Fate (Pierce Brosnan).
No matter who he fights, Black Adam's confrontations will be suitably intense if a recent behind-the-scenes photo Johnson shared on Instagram is anything to go by. The black and white snap shows the actor in full costume as Shazam's future arch-nemesis, with a fierce scowl on his face. Johnson appears to be seated on a modified crane arm designed to simulate flight, which suggests that the scene being filmed involves Black Adam either soaring skyward or crashing back to earth.
The former professional wrestler also updated fans on the progress of Black Adam's reshoots, posting a photo of himself talking through shots with director Jaume Collet-Serra and lead VFX editor Krisztian Majdik. Johnson added that he started physically preparing for the reshoots weeks before filming kicked off by adjusting his diet and increasing the intensity of his workouts. He also praised the Black Adam crew for their work on the production so far.
Although Black Adam continues to edge closer to completion, many fans remain disappointed that the film was delayed until October 2022. Producer Hiram Garcia explained why the DCEU movie's premiere was pushed back, attributing it to COVID-19. "I think we're just in a world right now where there was a huge and understandable freeze-up when the pandemic hit and a lot of productions were put on hold," he said. "Now that the industry has really roared back, the pipeline for VFX is so jammed. Obviously, all these superhero movies just require so much VFX, and we're just in a situation where the majority of the VFX houses are just completely swamped with work."
Warner Bros. recently addressed concerns over the film's delayed release by screening a Black Adam trailer at CinemaCon. Although the footage was enthusiastically received, at least one fan pointed out that a line of dialogue in it seemingly clashes with established DCEU canon. Johnson later dismissed this concern, saying, "Once you watch Black Adam, you'll understand the context of the line. It makes sense. The mythology of Teth/Black Adam. Ruthless with zero regard."
Black Adam premieres in theaters on Oct. 21.
