The original Baki the Grappler manga series by Keisuke Itagaki was published in Weekly Shōnen Champion from 1991 to 1999, producing 42 volumes worth of content. The story follows the titular teenage fighter as he trains to hone his impressive fighting abilities and battles against many deadly opponents in no rules, hand-to-hand combat. The manga quickly gained a passionate fan following upon its release and has inspired a wealth of spinoffs and sequels. It has also been adapted into other mediums, including multiple video games and anime series.
Baki Hanma is a sequel to Netflix's Baki, which was produced by TMS Entertainment (Detective Conan: Zero's Tea Time) and debuted on the streaming service in Japan in June 2018 and globally in December 2018. Across its two seasons, Baki covered the "Most Evil Death Row Convicts" and "Great Chinese Challenge" arcs of the manga series, producing a total of 39 episodes.
First announced back in September 2020, the 12-episode first season of Baki Hanma premiered on Netflix in September 2021. Many members of the creative team from Baki returned for the sequel series like director Toshiki Hirano (Vampire Princess Miyu), editor Yuriko Sano (Detective Conan: Magician of the Silver Sky), director of photography Tatsuo Noguchi (Tower of God) and music composer Kenji Fujisawa (Dragon Ball Super: Broly). Shingo Ishikawa (Lupin III: The Woman Called Fujiko Mine) joined the team as the new character designer, replacing Fujio Suzuki (Yu Yu Hakusho: Ghost Files).
Nobunaga Shimazaki (Fate/Grand Order - Absolute Demonic Front: Babylonia) starred as the titular character in Baki and reprised his role for the Baki Hanma. Other members of the sequel's cast include Akio Ohtsuka (Bleach), Houchu Ohtsuka (Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation), Kenji Nojima (Food Wars! Shokugeki no Soma: The Fifth Plate), Kōichi Yamadera (Cowboy Bebop), Masashi Ebara (Boruto: Naruto Next Generations), Megumi Han (Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045), Takaya Hashi (Fist of the North Star) and Mami Koyama (One Piece).
Presently, there is no official premiere date or window for the second season of Baki Hanma, but fans can stream its first season and both seasons of Baki on Netflix.
